Investigators say they are finally getting closer to cracking the chilling disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother nearly 100 days after the beloved Arizona grandmother mysteriously vanished from her upscale Tucson-area home.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed this week that authorities have made “really great” progress in the baffling case involving 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie — a case that has gripped the country and sparked disturbing theories about celebrity obsession, targeted abduction, and revenge.
Nancy disappeared from her home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills during the early morning hours of February 1, leaving behind almost no trace. Surveillance footage later released by investigators showed a masked figure lurking outside the property around the time she vanished, sending shockwaves through the quiet community.
Now, nearly 100 days later, law enforcement says they may finally be closing in on answers.
Speaking briefly to Fox News Digital on May 8, Sheriff Nanos confirmed investigators are making major strides behind the scenes.
“We are,” Nanos said when asked whether detectives were closer to solving the mystery.
The sheriff teased “really great” developments in the investigation but stopped short of revealing exactly what authorities may have uncovered.
The cryptic update comes as criminal profilers and forensic experts are floating increasingly unsettling theories about who may have taken Nancy — and why.
In a new NewsNation special examining the case, several high-profile experts suggested the suspect may have specifically targeted Nancy because of her connection to Today show star Savannah Guthrie.
Legendary criminal profiler Dr. Ann Burgess said she does not believe Nancy personally knew the individual suspected of abducting her.
“I wouldn’t think that Nancy Guthrie knew this person,” Burgess explained.
Behavior analyst Dr. Casey Jordan agreed and suggested the suspect may have recognized Nancy from television appearances with her famous daughter.
“It could have been somebody who saw her on the Today show with her daughter,” Jordan said. “Maybe not even have met her.”
Jordan added that the suspect could have been someone Nancy crossed paths with over the years while living in the same Tucson home since the 1970s.
“Could have been an Uber driver that she didn’t leave a big enough tip for, could have been any of hundreds of service workers,” Jordan speculated.
But the theories grew even darker.
During the special, experts raised the possibility that Nancy herself may not have been the true target at all — and that the alleged kidnapping may have been intended to emotionally destroy Savannah Guthrie.
When asked about motive, Burgess suggested investigators should focus on who has suffered most since Nancy vanished.
“In this case, it doesn’t have to be the mother,” Burgess explained. “It could be somebody in the family. Somebody — Savannah.”
When pressed on whether the suspect may have wanted Savannah to “suffer,” Burgess bluntly replied: “Yes.”
“And she’s haunted by that,” Jordan added.
Burgess agreed, pointing to the obvious emotional toll the disappearance has taken on the NBC host.
“I mean, it’s her mother,” she said.
Meanwhile, forensic psychologist Dr. Gary Brucato suggested the suspect may have also been motivated by a twisted desire for attention and notoriety tied to Savannah’s fame.
According to Brucato, criminals who target celebrities — or those connected to them — often crave a permanent place in public history.
“You can’t look up Abraham Lincoln without seeing John Wilkes Booth,” Brucato explained.
He described the behavior as having a “parasite quality,” where an alleged criminal attempts to attach themselves forever to a famous person through violence or trauma.
“And I wonder also about that,” he added, “that if attention seeking and resentment of somebody’s notoriety is not embedded somehow in the story.”
Despite the disturbing theories, investigators have not announced any arrests or officially named suspects in the case.
But with authorities now hinting at major progress after months of mystery, many are wondering whether the shocking truth behind Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance could finally be about to emerge.
