What was supposed to be an exciting day on the water ended in heartbreak after a North Carolina fisherman disappeared beneath a Tennessee lake moments before a bass tournament was set to begin.
Alexander C. Luster, 36, of Boone, North Carolina, was taking part in a fishing tournament on Watauga Lake Friday evening when disaster suddenly struck, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
Officials say the terrifying incident happened around 7 p.m. near the Rat Branch boat ramp in Hampton, Tennessee. Investigators said Luster fell overboard while his boat was in a no-wake zone — but for reasons that remain a mystery, he never resurfaced.
The shocking accident triggered a frantic search operation as wildlife officers, rescue crews, and first responders rushed to the scene hoping to find him alive.
As darkness fell over the lake, crews reportedly brought in a remotely operated underwater vehicle to help comb the deep water. Divers eventually recovered Luster’s body around 11:35 p.m., authorities confirmed.
Officials have not said what caused him to fall into the water, and an autopsy is now expected to determine exactly how he died.
The tragedy unfolded just before the bass tournament was scheduled to begin, making the devastating loss even more difficult for fellow anglers who had gathered for the event.
Watauga Lake, located inside Tennessee’s Cherokee National Forest, is known for its scenic beauty — but also its dangerous depths. Some areas of the lake reportedly reach more than 300 feet deep.
News of Luster’s death quickly spread online, with many expressing shock that such a seasoned outdoorsman could vanish so suddenly.
The investigation remains ongoing.
