Nancy Guthrie Case ‘Closer’ To Being Solved

Savannah Guthrie’s family is speaking out again as the terrifying disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, drags on more than three months after she vanished from her Arizona home — and now conflicting claims about what the family believed in those early hours are raising even more questions.

Investigators in Arizona say they are getting “definitely closer” to solving the mystery surrounding Nancy’s disappearance, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos. But despite the growing investigation, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the night of January 31 at her home near Tucson, Arizona. Almost immediately, investigators said there were disturbing signs that something far more sinister had happened.

Sheriff Nanos revealed back in February that evidence at the scene suggested Nancy “did not leave on her own,” and later said authorities believed the elderly mother of the Today show co-anchor was likely the victim of a targeted kidnapping.

But now, a surprising new claim from a sheriff’s department sergeant is putting the spotlight back on those frantic first hours after Nancy vanished.

During an appearance on journalist Brian Entin’s podcast, Sergeant Aaron Cross claimed the Guthrie family originally believed Nancy may have simply wandered away from home.

“The family was pretty insistent that this was a walk away,” Cross said.

That statement immediately drew pushback from Entin, who said he had heard the exact opposite from sources close to the case.

Entin claimed the family repeatedly told law enforcement that Nancy would never just disappear on her own because she was dealing with serious physical limitations but remained mentally sharp.

“The family was having to remind them over and over again like, ‘No, she wouldn’t just walk away. She’s in bad health and she doesn’t have cognitive issues,’” Entin said.

Cross responded by saying that was not the information he had gathered.

“The family believed she was out there, you know, that she had walked away,” the sergeant insisted.

The conflicting accounts are only fueling public fascination with the disturbing case.

At a press conference shortly after Nancy disappeared, Sheriff Nanos publicly stated that the family wanted everyone to understand “this isn’t somebody who just wandered off.”

He also described Nancy as “as sharp as a tack,” despite suffering from severe physical pain and mobility issues.

Savannah Guthrie herself pushed back against the idea that her mother could have simply wandered away during an emotional Today interview in March.

“We were trying to make clear from the very beginning that this isn’t that case that you are used to where someone wanders off,” Savannah said at the time.

She explained that her mother had been in “tremendous pain” and struggling badly with her back, making it unlikely she could have gone far on her own.

Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer said she believes investigators quickly realized this was no ordinary missing persons case.

“Once you check every place that is in the possibility of her being able to walk with a cane, and that didn’t happen, that is off the board,” Coffindaffer said.

According to Coffindaffer, disturbing evidence at the scene pointed to foul play almost immediately.

“When you see a Nest camera pulled from its mount and blood leading to a vehicle, you immediately know that something nefarious has gone on,” she explained.

Authorities later released surveillance images showing what appeared to be an armed individual tampering with the camera outside Nancy’s front door on the morning she disappeared.

The FBI and local investigators said the images were recovered after previously inaccessible footage was uncovered during the investigation.

Meanwhile, rumors exploded online after a human bone was reportedly discovered near Nancy’s neighborhood. But authorities later clarified the remains were not believed to be connected to the case and instead appeared to require a “prehistoric anthropological investigation.”

Even with the bizarre twists and mounting public attention, investigators remain tight-lipped about who may be responsible for Nancy’s disappearance.

For now, Savannah Guthrie’s family continues waiting for answers as one of the country’s most haunting missing persons cases remains unsolved.
