Panda Express is under fire after conservative livestreamers claimed workers at a Washington state location called police on them over nothing more than a MAGA hat and a thumbs-up gesture — igniting fresh outrage over alleged political intolerance toward Trump supporters.
The incident reportedly unfolded May 10 at a Panda Express in Lakewood, Washington, where conservative vlogger Chris Sims says he and fellow streamer Danny Rebel were filming content when tensions suddenly exploded inside the restaurant.
According to Sims, one of the cooks began glaring at him because he was wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat — a symbol that has become increasingly controversial in deep-blue areas of the country.
Instead of ignoring the situation, Sims said he tried to break the tension by giving the worker a thumbs up and asking if there was a problem.
The answer shocked him.
“Your hat,” the employee allegedly responded, according to Sims.
What happened next quickly turned a routine fast-food stop into a viral political firestorm.
Sims claims Panda Express staff escalated the confrontation and called police, falsely accusing the pair of refusing to leave the restaurant. But according to the vloggers, they walked outside and stood on a public sidewalk while continuing to film.
Even then, Sims says several employees allegedly followed them outside and attempted to intimidate them into stopping the recording.
Police eventually arrived at the scene — but according to both Sims and the Lakewood Police Department, officers determined the streamers had done nothing wrong.
“No crime, no disturbance, just a hat and a thumbs up,” Sims wrote in a viral post on X that has since fueled fierce debate online.
The Lakewood Police Department later confirmed the encounter to reporters, stating officers spoke with the streamers outside the restaurant and found no wrongdoing on their part. Police reportedly told staff that any concerns about the situation would need to be handled internally by restaurant management.
The controversy comes as growing numbers of conservatives say they are being openly targeted, mocked, or removed from businesses simply for expressing support for President Donald Trump.
The political divide has become especially heated in left-leaning West Coast states like Washington and California, where public displays of Trump support can trigger backlash both online and in person.
Panda Express responded to the incident in a carefully worded statement, saying the company wants “everyone who walks into Panda Express to feel welcome and treated with respect.”
The company also said it reviewed the incident internally and reminded employees about maintaining a “welcoming experience for every guest.”
But for many conservatives online, the damage was already done.
Social media exploded with accusations of political discrimination, with critics questioning why a customer wearing a MAGA hat would allegedly prompt a police response in the first place.
Others pointed to a growing list of incidents involving Trump supporters being confronted in public spaces, arguing the situation reflects a deeper hostility toward conservatives in America’s cultural institutions.
The viral confrontation also reignited debate over whether businesses are truly politically neutral — or whether some employees are allowing personal politics to shape how customers are treated.
As the video and online backlash continue spreading across conservative social media circles, Panda Express now finds itself at the center of another culture war flashpoint in an already deeply divided America.
