Son Asked Mom for Dairy Queen as His “Last Meal” Before Killing Her

A Wisconsin family is reeling after police say a 27-year-old man asked his mother to pick him up from Dairy Queen for one final meal — then went home and allegedly killed her in a brutal stabbing.

Authorities say Lisa M. Bragg-Hurlburt, 56, was found dead Friday, May 22, inside her Eau Claire home after suffering multiple stab wounds.

Her son, Michael J. Hurlburt, has now been charged with first-degree murder.

According to investigators, Michael allegedly called 911 himself and reported that he had killed someone. When the dispatcher asked what happened, he reportedly answered chillingly: “I killed her.”

Police say the day began with a disturbing request. Michael allegedly asked his mother to pick him up from a Dairy Queen in nearby Menomonie because he wanted it to be his “last meal” before being arrested.

Lisa reportedly drove him back to her home after he told her he wanted to talk privately.

Instead, prosecutors allege, he stabbed her roughly 40 times.

According to the criminal complaint cited by local outlets, Michael allegedly told investigators he killed his mother “to make a statement to the rest of the family.”

The shocking case has shaken the small Wisconsin community where Lisa was known not for scandal, but for service.

She was the director of the Colfax Public Library and remembered as an artist, a creative spirit, and a woman with a quirky sense of humor. Her loved ones said she helped build a food pantry through the library and quietly supported people who needed food, dignity, and hope.

“Lisa was not a headline. She was not a statistic,” the Village of Colfax said in a statement.

Authorities have not revealed a clear motive. According to reports, Michael allegedly claimed he was being “gang-stalked” by the U.S. and Chinese governments.

He remains charged with first-degree murder. It is not clear whether he has entered a plea, and his attorney declined to comment to PEOPLE.

Now a community is left mourning a woman remembered for kindness, while police and prosecutors try to answer one horrifying question: why would a son allegedly turn on the mother who came to pick him up?
