Amazon Worker Gave Chilling Warning Came Before Killing Coworker

A missing gun accessory. A workplace parking lot. A chilling warning that “no one’s going home today.”

Then a 22-year-old man was dead.

A Minnesota man has been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison after a deadly confrontation outside an Amazon fulfillment center ended with one coworker shot in the chest over what prosecutors described as a shockingly trivial dispute.

Mohamed A. Hared, 26, was sentenced Thursday to 128 months behind bars after pleading guilty to second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony in the death of Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, 22.

The fatal shooting unfolded on June 29, 2024, in the parking lot of an Amazon facility in Lakeville, Minnesota, where Hared, Cariif and another coworker had carpooled for an overnight shift.

According to the criminal complaint, the dispute started when Hared realized a flashlight attachment was missing from his handgun, which had been left inside the car.

Instead of letting security handle it, authorities said Hared accused his coworkers of taking the missing piece. Both denied it.

But prosecutors say Hared would not let it go.

During another break, the men returned to the vehicle to search again. When one coworker suggested calling security, Hared allegedly delivered the line that now hangs over the entire case.

“No. You guys took my flashlight. I want my flashlight back. No one’s going home today,” he said, according to the complaint.

Hours later, that warning turned deadly.

Investigators said a second confrontation broke out after the men separated. Hared pulled a handgun, and Cariif tried to grab the weapon, according to a witness.

The first shot hit a nearby vehicle.

Then came the desperate plea.

“Don’t shoot,” Cariif and the witness yelled, according to investigators.

Authorities said Hared fired again anyway.

The bullet struck Cariif in the chest, tearing into his heart, lung and aorta. He died in the parking lot.

Prosecutors said surveillance footage showed Hared had chances to walk away but kept the confrontation going until it ended in bloodshed.

Hared was first charged with second-degree intentional murder. He later pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony.

Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena called the killing exactly what many stunned readers will see it as: senseless.

“It’s so senseless the victim was shot to death over such a trivial matter,” Keena said when charges were announced. “Deadly gun violence has no place in our communities, neighborhoods or at our places of work.”

Hared received credit for 700 days already served and remains in custody pending transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

A young man went to work and never came home. All, prosecutors say, because of a missing flashlight attachment and a gun that never should have turned a workplace argument into a death sentence.
