U.S. Diplomat Found Dead in Hotel

A U.S. diplomat has been found dead inside a hotel in Myanmar, and a Thai woman has reportedly been detained as investigators probe what local authorities are treating as a possible homicide.

The American government employee was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, according to the State Department, which confirmed the death but offered few details as questions swirl around the disturbing case.

“We can confirm the death of a U.S. government employee assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, Myanmar,” a State Department spokesperson told The Associated Press. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones, we have no further information to provide at this time.”

The diplomat was reportedly discovered dead about two weeks ago at the Sakura Residence & Hotel, a well-known property near the U.S. Embassy that is often used by diplomats, foreign workers and international visitors.

Sources told the AP that Myanmar police are investigating the death as a possible homicide and have taken a Thai woman into custody. Authorities, however, have released almost no public information about what happened, who the woman is, or what connection she may have had to the American official.

The silence surrounding the case has only added to the mystery.

Police declined to comment. Hotel management also refused to discuss the matter. Thai officials would not say whether the detained woman has received consular assistance.
