CBS News is facing a full-blown newsroom revolt as newly installed boss Bari Weiss reportedly stays tucked away in a secured executive office while chaos explodes around the future of 60 Minutes.
Weiss, the journalist and Free Press founder brought in to shake up CBS News, has remained largely out of sight as furious staffers lash out over her dramatic overhaul of the long-running newsmagazine, according to reports.
Instead of working openly on the newsroom floor, Weiss has reportedly been operating from a sixth-floor executive suite inside CBS’ Broadcast Center in Manhattan — an area that can only be accessed with a special key card.
The restricted setup has quickly become a symbol of the growing divide inside CBS News, where rank-and-file employees are reportedly fuming over sweeping changes at one of the most famous programs in American television.
The drama comes after a disputed 60 Minutes segment on El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison sparked an internal firestorm.
Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi accused network leadership of trying to “sanitize accurate reporting” after Weiss reportedly pulled the piece shortly before it was set to air so additional interviews could be conducted.
That decision lit the fuse on a much bigger battle over the direction of 60 Minutes — a show long accused by conservatives of leaning left and protecting establishment narratives.
Weiss then moved forward with a major shakeup that led to the exits of several high-profile figures, including executive producer Tanya Simon, senior executive producer Draggan Mihailovich, Alfonsi, and correspondent Cecilia Vega.
The purge sent shockwaves through the newsroom and triggered outrage from current and former staffers who demanded answers about why some of the program’s most recognizable names were pushed out.
Veteran correspondent Scott Pelley reportedly confronted new executive producer Nick Bilton during a staff meeting and accused Weiss of “murdering” 60 Minutes.
Pelley also allegedly claimed Weiss had been “brought in to kill it.”
He was later fired and went on to accuse CBS management of trying to inject “falsehoods and bias” into the network’s reporting.
But for critics of the old CBS culture, the meltdown may say more about the newsroom’s resistance to change than about Weiss herself.
Weiss has built her brand by challenging elite media groupthink, criticizing progressive orthodoxy, and giving space to voices that traditional newsrooms have often ignored. Her arrival at CBS was always likely to rattle staffers who preferred the old way of doing business.
The turmoil became so severe that 60 Minutes correspondents Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim privately discussed whether they should remain with the broadcast.
They ultimately stayed, but issued a blistering joint memo warning they did not “want to see 60 Minutes die.”
The trio also slammed CBS News for allegedly treating their former colleagues “so shabbily, with such indecency” and warned that “newsrooms are not supposed to be run like dictatorships.”
Still, Paramount appears to be standing firmly behind Weiss.
Paramount chief executive David Ellison recently praised her as a “singular talent” and said she was the person he had “empowered to run our newsroom.”
That backing suggests CBS leadership may be prepared to weather the internal outrage as it attempts to reshape a legacy news operation that has struggled to regain public trust in a deeply divided media environment.
Meanwhile, questions continue to swirl about the future of CBS News.
Reports have suggested Paramount has explored bringing in a veteran media executive to help oversee a combined CBS News-CNN operation if its proposed Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition is completed.
For now, one thing is clear: Weiss was hired to disrupt the old CBS order — and the old guard is not going quietly.

She\’s a disgrace to America and a bitch
According to recent surveys most Americans don’t trust the legacy news. That is the fault of the looney liberals who distorted the truth to match their beliefs. Had they stuck with objective reporting they would have more viewers, more profits for their company and RESPECT. Sadly, no
one will remember these people 10 years from now.
If Weiss was brought in to shake up the CBS, I would say she has done her job exceptionally well.
