Massachusetts Toddler Killed by Train in Heartbreaking Tragedy

A Massachusetts family is grieving an unimaginable loss after their 21-month-old daughter was struck and killed by a train in Springfield.

The toddler, identified by local outlets as Gloria Elikana, died after the horrific incident near the train tracks on Emily Street on June 10. Springfield police said officers were called to the area around 6:15 p.m. after reports that a small child had been hit by a train.

Gloria was rushed to a local hospital, but she could not be saved. She was later pronounced dead.

The little girl was the youngest of five children in a family that had already endured years of hardship before building a new life in the United States. According to a GoFundMe page created on behalf of the family, Gloria’s relatives came to America in 2016 after fleeing genocide and living as refugees in Tanzania.

Now, the family is facing another devastating trauma.

“The family is in shock and mourning,” the fundraiser states.

Gloria’s father, identified on the fundraiser as Elikana, has served as a pastor for the past seven years and is described as a man deeply devoted to his community. Organizers said the pain of losing his little girl has also reopened old wounds, including the death of his older brother in an accident years ago.

Gloria’s mother, Happiness, is also struggling to process the sudden death of her baby daughter.

“Happiness, Gloria’s mother, is struggling to reconcile with the death of her baby girl,” the GoFundMe page says. “The family works hard to provide for their children, but this tragedy has left them facing overwhelming funeral expenses and emotional hardship.”

The fundraiser, which was set up to help cover funeral costs and support the grieving family, had raised more than $11,000 toward an $18,000 goal.

Organizers thanked the community for rallying around the family during what they described as a period of deep mourning.

“We want to thank everyone for their support and recognize the deep mourning the family is experiencing,” the campaign states.

Springfield police told WGGB that investigators are still working to determine how the toddler ended up on the tracks.

As the investigation continues, the tragedy has left a local community shaken and a refugee family mourning the loss of a little girl whose life ended far too soon.
