Mother’s Day turned into every parent’s worst nightmare after a toddler tragically fell to her death from a high-rise apartment building in Toronto, leaving neighbors devastated and searching for answers.
The heartbreaking incident happened around 12:20 p.m. Sunday at a residential tower near Don Mills Road and Graydon Hall Drive in North York, a district of Toronto, Ontario. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after reports that a small child had fallen from the building, but despite their efforts, the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not revealed exactly which floor the child fell from, though shaken residents told local media the toddler may have fallen from the 19th floor of the 20-story apartment tower. According to reports, pink flip-flops were visible near the taped-off area below the building, a haunting detail that left neighbors emotional.
Residents described the family as kind and friendly, with some saying they had only recently moved into the building.
“My heart dropped,” one neighbor told CityNews after learning the victim was the little girl she had often seen in the elevator. “The family, the kids, they were so nice. Every time we’d see them in the elevator, the little girl, she would wave and laugh at us. So heartbreaking.”
As police continued investigating the tragedy, another longtime resident, Darlene Durette, said she felt compelled to honor the little girl in some way. The grieving mother placed a Mickey Mouse toy near the scene along with a handwritten note reading, “Rest in peace, little one.”
“When I found out it was a child, it just broke my heart,” Durette said. “I had to do something. I’m a mother.”
Toronto police confirmed the child’s identity has been established but said they are not releasing additional information at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
The devastating accident has once again raised concerns about child safety in high-rise apartment buildings, particularly as more families move into densely populated urban towers across North America. For many neighbors, however, the focus remains on the unimaginable grief now facing the child’s family after a Mother’s Day celebration ended in tragedy.
