Federal agents may have stopped one of the most horrifying attacks in modern American history after uncovering an alleged extremist plot to turn a White House event into a massacre.
At least seven members of a Christian-based, anti-government extremist group with reported admiration for Adolf Hitler have been arrested so far, according to federal authorities. Investigators say the group had been targeting the White House and allegedly planned to unleash chaos during a recent UFC event held on the president’s front lawn.
The alleged plan, according to federal court documents, was chilling.
Authorities say the suspects intended to use drones to drop explosives on the north side of the White House, sparking panic and forcing terrified eventgoers toward areas where armed snipers would be waiting.
From there, investigators claim, a larger network of roughly 23 alleged gunmen and co-conspirators planned to storm the grounds and target high-ranking officials, politicians and other “high-value” figures.
The alleged plot was not thrown together at the last minute. Federal documents describe a highly organized plan with members divided into tiers.
Tier 1 allegedly included gunmen and drone operators. Tier 2 was made up of getaway drivers. Tier 3 was tasked with logistical support, including finding and creating “underground railroad”-style escape routes. Tier 4 allegedly included social media influencers and fundraisers.
According to the affidavit, Tier 1 and Tier 2 members were supposed to meet in Fredericksburg, Virginia, about 50 miles south of the White House, two days before the planned attack.
“Some plans indicated that members of the group would travel from the area of the White House to the Potomac River and travel along the river to escape the area,” the documents stated.
But the alleged nightmare began to fall apart on June 10, when the mother of 19-year-old Tycen Proper, of Danville, Ohio, called police with a warning.
She was reportedly alarmed by her son’s recent behavior, including firearms purchases and his online communications with suspicious individuals.
According to the affidavit, Proper’s mother and her husband had grown increasingly worried about the teen’s new online contacts and conversations involving phrases such as “hit and run missions” and “recons.”
They were also disturbed by what he had done with his graduation money.
Investigators say Proper spent about $3,000 on a new shotgun, a rifle and large amounts of ammunition. He was also allegedly found with multiple knives, a hatchet, two tactical headsets and a compass.
Under questioning, according to the affidavit, Proper allegedly admitted the attack was designed to “jumpstart” a revolution in the United States.
Private investigator Jason Jensen said the mother’s decision to speak up, combined with the FBI’s swift response, may have saved hundreds of lives.
Jensen compared the potential carnage to the 2017 Las Vegas massacre, when gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire from a hotel window on a country music festival crowd, killing 61 people and injuring hundreds more.
“That was just one individual, but if you have nearly two dozen shooters, the number of dead and wounded would have grown exponentially,” Jensen said. “If the plan was carried out, they would’ve been picking people off like a shooting gallery.”
He warned the death toll could have been devastating.
“When you have semiautomatic rifles that can fire off one round per second, you could’ve had hundreds of people injured or dead by the time the authorities would’ve figured out what was happening,” Jensen added.
Now, federal authorities are continuing to investigate the alleged network behind the plot, while the arrests already made have raised terrifying questions about how close the country may have come to a deadly attack at one of the most protected sites in America.
For one frightened mother, a phone call to police may have made all the difference.
