Teacher Spends 700 Days Behind Bars in Trans Pronoun Battle

Irish teacher Enoch Burke has been released from prison after spending roughly 700 days behind bars in a dramatic legal battle that has become an international flashpoint over religious freedom, compelled speech, and gender ideology in schools.

Burke, an Evangelical Christian and former teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School in County Westmeath, was released on orders from the High Court in Dublin, bringing an end — at least for now — to one of Ireland’s most closely watched culture-war clashes.

At the center of the controversy is Burke’s refusal to use transgender pronouns he said violated his Christian beliefs. The dispute began in August 2022, when Burke objected to a school policy requiring staff to address a student by a new name and pronouns after the student began identifying as the opposite sex.

Burke argued that complying would violate his conscience and his religious convictions. The school, however, suspended him amid the dispute, and the case quickly spiraled into a legal battle after he continued showing up on school grounds despite being ordered to stay away.

Over the next several years, Burke was repeatedly jailed for contempt of court after breaching court injunctions connected to the school dispute.
