The DNC’s Cash Crisis Destroying Party

The Democratic National Committee is reportedly in full-blown panic mode as its cash crisis deepens and internal drama spills into public view.

DNC Chairman Ken Martin is now facing growing questions about whether he can steady a party still reeling from its bruising 2024 election losses. According to a new report from The New York Times, Martin has become increasingly isolated as the committee struggles with roughly $2 million in debt and mounting anxiety over the party’s financial position heading into the midterms.

The situation looks even more dire when compared with Republicans. President Donald Trump is backed by a super PAC reportedly sitting on $400 million, while CNN reported in March that the Republican National Committee had $109 million on hand, giving the GOP a massive 7-to-1 cash advantage over the DNC.

Behind closed doors, Martin is reportedly asking vendors not to bill the committee until after the midterm elections, a remarkable sign of financial strain for the national arm of one of America’s two major political parties.

The money troubles appear to be taking a toll inside the DNC. According to the Times, Martin had a heated outburst last month that ended with him throwing his phone at the desk of a junior aide.

Even Martin has reportedly joked about the possibility that his tenure may not last as long as expected. His term is not scheduled to end until 2029, but the pressure around his leadership has intensified as Democrats search for a path forward after their 2024 defeats.

Martin took over the DNC after winning a contested leadership race in February 2025. Since then, he has been tasked with rebuilding the party’s brand, restoring donor confidence, and preparing Democrats for another brutal election cycle.

So far, critics say the results have been underwhelming.

In December, Martin failed to deliver a long-promised review of the party’s 2024 loss. After pressure mounted, he released what was described as an incomplete and inconclusive draft that drew frustration from Democrats looking for answers.

Inside the committee, Martin has reportedly become increasingly worried about leaks. According to four people who described his remarks to the Times, Martin warned staffers after negative stories began surfacing.

“It p—es me off when I see leaks out of this building,” Martin reportedly said. “No more of that s—. No more.”

He then reportedly reminded staffers that their futures were tied to his own leadership.

“My success is your success,” Martin said, according to the report. “So the weaker I am, the weaker all of you are.”

The latest turmoil comes after another embarrassing controversy involving former DNC Vice Chair David Hogg.

In June 2025, leaked audio from a Zoom call revealed Martin accusing Hogg of undermining his leadership. During the call, Martin admitted he was still trying to establish himself in the role and build enough credibility to raise money effectively.

“No one knows who the hell I am, right?” Martin said in the recording obtained by Politico. “I’m trying to get my sea legs underneath of me and actually develop any amount of credibility so I can go out there and raise the money and do the job I need to to put ourselves in a position to win.”

Martin told Hogg that while he did not believe the young activist intended to damage him, the fallout had been severe.

“I don’t think you intended this,” Martin said, “but you essentially destroyed any chance I have to show the leadership that I need to. So it’s really frustrating.”

Hogg, a Parkland survivor and gun control activist, later stepped down from the committee, citing “fundamental disagreements” over the role of vice chair.

For Republicans, the chaos could hardly come at a better time. While Democrats fight over leadership, leaks, debt, and donor confidence, the GOP is heading into the midterm cycle with a major cash advantage and a united message behind Trump.

For Democrats, the question now is whether Martin can repair the damage before the party’s financial problems become a political disaster.
