Passengers Scream as Plane Walls Crash Down Mid-Flight (Video)

Passengers aboard a Boeing 737 screamed and prayed as violent shaking ripped ceiling panels loose inside the cabin during a terrifying flight over Iran.

The Sepehran Airlines jet was traveling from Mashhad to Kermanshah on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when a mechanical problem developed shortly after takeoff, forcing the pilots to turn around and make an emergency return to Mashhad.

Dramatic video filmed inside the aircraft shows the cabin shaking violently as sections of the ceiling lining break loose and fall toward frightened passengers.

Some travelers can be seen gripping their seats while others shout and pray as panels hang overhead and parts of the aircraft’s interior structure become exposed.

Despite the frightening scene, no injuries were reported.

More detailed accounts of the incident suggest the violent shaking was not simply caused by turbulence.

Hassan Jafari, public relations director for airports in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan province, said the outer rubber, or tread, separated from one of the Boeing 737’s landing-gear tires during takeoff.

Jafari specifically said the tire itself did not burst, correcting some early reports that described the incident as a blown tire.

The flight reportedly departed Mashhad’s Shahid Hasheminejad International Airport at around 5:30 p.m. local time.

Roughly nine minutes later, the flight crew reported an engine emergency and requested permission to return to the airport.

Exactly how the landing-gear problem, reported engine trouble and extreme vibration were connected has not yet been publicly established.

Footage from inside the plane clearly shows the results, however.

The shaking was powerful enough to dislodge sections of the cabin ceiling and overhead interior panels, sending them down around passengers as the pilots worked to bring the jet safely back to Mashhad.

The aircraft ultimately landed without further incident.

Passengers were able to get off safely and were later transferred to another aircraft to continue their journey to Kermanshah.

Mashhad Airport temporarily closed a runway following the emergency so crews could inspect the area and deal with the incident. Normal operations later resumed.

Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization is now investigating what caused the mechanical problems and how they led to such severe vibration inside the aircraft.

The incident comes only weeks after another frightening event involving a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 at the same airport.

On Aug. 25, another Sepehran 737 arriving in Mashhad from Tehran veered off the runway after landing and came to a stop with its nose landing gear collapsed.

There were no reported injuries in that incident either, and aviation authorities opened an investigation.

There is currently no official finding linking the two incidents.

The latest scare has attracted widespread attention largely because of the extraordinary passenger video showing just how violently the cabin was shaking.

While early reports described a tire burst and some headlines blamed extreme turbulence, officials have not yet announced a final cause.

What is known is that the crew successfully returned the damaged aircraft to Mashhad and everyone aboard made it off safely.
