Woman Left Paralyzed at Festival After ‘Man Falls Out of a Tree’

A Tennessee woman says her life changed in an instant after a man watching a rock festival from a tree came crashing down and landed directly on her.

Jamie Ulshoffer was attending the massive Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, with her husband, Conor, on Friday, Sept. 18, when the freak accident unfolded during a performance by Kentucky hardcore band Knocked Loose.

According to local reporting from the Louisville Courier Journal, Jamie and a friend were sitting near the back of the performance area when a man who had climbed a nearby tree fell at around 11:15 p.m. and landed on her.

Louisville Metro Police said officers who were already nearby immediately provided first aid before emergency medical crews transported Jamie to UofL Hospital.

The injuries were devastating.

Conor told the Courier Journal that his wife suffered a broken back, three cracked ribs and a severed spinal cord that has left her paralyzed from the waist down. She remained hospitalized following the accident as doctors treated her injuries.

Jamie later told Louisville station WHAS11 that she could no longer feel her feet and was struggling to come to terms with everything she may no longer be able to do.

Her husband said he did not actually see the man fall. Instead, he turned around and found Jamie lying on her back as people around them explained that someone had fallen from a tree.

The timing of the accident added another troubling wrinkle.

Knocked Loose’s performance had been delayed by severe weather earlier in the evening. The band’s set was pushed back to approximately 11:05 p.m., about 10 minutes before the fall was reported.

Police later said the man apparently fell after a tree limb broke underneath him.

Louisville Metro Police have not opened a criminal investigation into the incident and have described it as a civil matter, according to WHAS11. That means the decision not to pursue criminal charges does not necessarily resolve any separate questions involving possible civil liability.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg also addressed the accident, saying he felt for anyone injured at one of the city’s major events while stressing that festivalgoers are not supposed to be climbing trees.

Despite the severity of her injuries, Jamie said she does not appear to be holding onto anger toward the man who fell.

She told WHAS11 that climbing the tree had been a bad decision, particularly after rain, but said she was willing to forgive him.

Festival organizer Danny Wimmer Presents has offered few details about the incident.

A Louder Than Life spokesperson told the Courier Journal that organizers were aware of an incident handled by law enforcement and medical personnel but said they could not discuss specific medical cases because of patient privacy.

Jamie and Conor are from Clarksville, Tennessee, and had attended Louder Than Life before. Her husband said the couple shares a love of music festivals and remains uncertain about when Jamie will be able to return home as she continues treatment in Kentucky.

A fundraiser has since been created by Jamie’s family to help with medical bills, rehabilitation and other expenses stemming from the accident.

The incident happened during one of the country’s largest rock and metal festivals.

Louder Than Life ran from Sept. 17 through Sept. 20 at the Kentucky Exposition Center. According to the festival’s official website, the 2026 event featured more than 200 bands spread across seven stages. The festival began as a one-day event in 2014 before growing into a four-day destination event.

For Jamie and her family, however, what was supposed to be another weekend built around their shared love of live music has turned into the beginning of an uncertain and potentially life-changing recovery.
