A shocking discovery shook Little Havana (Miami, FL) on Sunday morning when a woman’s body was found inside a Dollar Tree freezer just before the store was set to open.
Miami police responded to the store at 968 SW Eighth St. around 8 a.m. after an employee made the grisly find. The woman was later identified as 32-year-old Helen Massiell Garay Sanchez.
As of Sunday afternoon, authorities labeled the case an “unclassified death,” pending the medical examiner’s report, according to Miami police officer Michael Vega.
Despite the grim scene, nearby businesses carried on with their usual Sunday routines. Goodwill, located next door, and the Taco Bell just east continued to serve customers, while Little Havana residents filmed police officers and detectives coming and going from the Dollar Tree.
Family members of Sanchez were visibly distraught, consoling each other behind crime scene tape in front of Goodwill. When they eventually emerged, they politely declined to speak with the media and left quietly once the body was removed.
The Dollar Tree, which normally opens at 8 a.m., finally welcomed customers around 1 p.m., with a manager unusually greeting everyone with a “Hello” as shoppers entered.
The circumstances surrounding Sanchez’s death remain unclear, and authorities continue their investigation.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
