Bombshell Report Claims a Murdaugh Murder Cover-Up

A new report is raising explosive questions about the missing weapons in the Murdaugh murders — and whether a longtime law enforcement friend helped conceal evidence after the killings.

Yemassee Police Chief Greg Alexander has been subpoenaed in a South Carolina grand jury investigation into an alleged cover-up, FITSNews reported Sept. 25. His attorney denies the allegations.

Citing unnamed sources familiar with the inquiry, the outlet reported that witnesses claimed to have seen weapons used in the murders in Alexander’s possession afterward. It also reported allegations that he described participating in a cover-up and implicated another law enforcement official. Those claims have not been established in court.

Alexander’s attorney, Joe McCulloch, called the allegations “absurd.”

“They need to stop chasing fictional rabbits and start preparing for trial,” he told FITSNews.

The outlet said neither the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division nor the attorney general’s office immediately provided comment on the reported inquiry. Its account did not announce criminal charges against Alexander.

The allegations arrive as Alex Murdaugh prepares to face a second jury over the deaths of his wife, Maggie, and their 22-year-old son, Paul. Both were shot at the family’s Moselle property in rural Islandton on June 7, 2021.

Murdaugh denies killing them. His 2023 murder convictions were overturned earlier this year, but he remains imprisoned for separate financial crimes.

The missing guns have long been an unresolved part of the case. The new report puts their whereabouts back in focus, but an allegation that someone possessed them is not the same as investigators recovering and identifying them.

Alexander’s friendship with Murdaugh had already attracted scrutiny. According to the RadarOnline account, Murdaugh wrote him a $5,000 check shortly after the killings. Alexander previously explained that the money was a loan for his parents and that he acted as an intermediary.

Radar also reported that Murdaugh’s younger brother, John Marvin, testified during the first trial that Alexander accompanied him to the property after the murders. Neither the friendship nor the payment, by itself, establishes involvement in a crime.

The next murder trial is scheduled to begin April 5, 2027, in Sumter County — more than six months away. Judge Debra McCaslin selected the new location in September after ruling that the case should move outside the judicial circuit where Murdaugh’s family had long wielded influence. The decision also considered courthouse facilities, security and the ability to seat an impartial jury.

The reason for the retrial is separate from the latest cover-up allegations.

In its May 13 ruling, the South Carolina Supreme Court found that former Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill improperly influenced jurors during the original proceeding.

The justices concluded that Hill’s comments attacked Murdaugh’s credibility and compromised his right to a fair trial. Their decision overturned the convictions; it did not declare him innocent. Prosecutors must now prove the murder charges again before a new jury.

Hill’s own criminal case also moved beyond the stage described in the original article. She resigned in March 2024, and SLED announced charges against her in May 2025. She pleaded guilty that December to perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct charges and received three years of probation. Those convictions concerned conduct including access to sealed evidence and misuse of her office; she was not criminally charged with jury tampering.

Whatever happens at the murder retrial, Murdaugh’s financial convictions remain a separate legal barrier to freedom. The Justice Department announced his 40-year federal sentence in April 2024 after he admitted crimes involving money stolen from clients.

For now, the central distinction is between a reported investigation and proven evidence. Whether the new allegations produce charges, recovered weapons or testimony at Murdaugh’s retrial remains unresolved.
