Doug Emhoff reportedly has serious reservations about another Kamala Harris presidential campaign — even as his wife continues to keep the door open to a possible 2028 White House run.
The former second gentleman has privately told some people that he would prefer Harris not run for president again, according to a new report.
However, people familiar with Emhoff’s thinking say the 61-year-old would still support his wife if she ultimately decides to enter the race.
The revelation adds another layer of uncertainty to Harris’ political future nearly two years after she lost the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump.
Harris, 61, has not announced whether she will make another attempt at the presidency.
She has repeatedly insisted that her immediate priority is helping Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections.
“I have not decided if I’m going to run again,” Harris said during a recent appearance, adding that she believes what happens in 2026 could have major consequences for the next presidential election.
Despite that public uncertainty, Harris has remained highly active politically.
She has traveled on behalf of Democratic candidates, maintained contact with donors and supporters, and continued building relationships in politically important states — moves that have inevitably fueled speculation that another presidential campaign remains under consideration.
Emhoff’s reported hesitation is particularly notable because he was one of Harris’ most visible supporters during her previous campaigns.
His reservations do not necessarily mean there is a political or personal split between the couple over her future. The report indicates that he is expected to stand behind Harris if she ultimately decides another presidential run is what she wants.
Still, another Harris campaign would come with significant challenges.
She would enter the contest with virtually universal name recognition and a nationwide fundraising network, but she would also have to convince Democratic voters that she deserves another opportunity after losing to Trump in 2024.
Some Democrats have openly discussed the possibility of turning to a new generation of candidates in 2028, while Harris supporters argue that her experience as vice president, senator and presidential nominee would make her one of the party’s strongest contenders.
One potential rival has already made an unusual promise about what he would do if Harris enters the race.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he would not run against Harris in the 2028 Democratic primary.
“I wouldn’t run if she ran,” Newsom said.
When Tapper pressed him on the declaration, Newsom insisted he would not put himself — or Harris — through such a contest.
Newsom argued that the two Californians share many of the same donors, political allies and supporters, making a head-to-head primary battle potentially damaging for both.
He described such a matchup as “mutual assured destruction” that could benefit their other Democratic rivals.
Newsom’s comments were particularly striking because the California governor has increasingly fueled speculation about his own national ambitions.
He has traveled to politically important states and campaigned for Democrats while preparing to leave the governor’s office because of California’s term limits.
Newsom told CNN that any presidential campaign would also require the support of his wife and four children.
He said anyone considering the White House must determine whether they can “meet the moment” and represent what voters are looking for rather than simply running because the opportunity exists.
For Harris, the decision could reshape the entire 2028 Democratic field.
If she runs, she would immediately become one of the most recognizable candidates in the race and could discourage at least some potential challengers.
If she stays out, Democrats could face a wide-open battle featuring governors, senators and other national figures seeking to become the party’s next standard-bearer.
For now, Harris appears determined to keep everyone guessing.
And if the latest report is accurate, one of the people closest to her may be hoping that the answer eventually turns out to be no.
