Elderly Veteran Killed by Stray Bullet While Leaving Walmart

An 81-year-old Navy veteran who was simply heading home after shopping at Walmart was killed by a stray bullet when gunfire erupted across a crowded Georgia parking lot, leaving his family devastated and police searching for a teenage suspect.

James Edward McDaniel, a husband, father of four and great-grandfather from Lula, Georgia, was riding a mobility scooter toward his vehicle outside the Walmart in Gainesville on Wednesday evening, October 14, when he was struck by gunfire.

The shooting happened shortly after 7 p.m. at the Walmart on Shallowford Road. McDaniel, who had nothing to do with the violence, was rushed to Northeast Georgia Medical Center but later died from his injuries.

Investigators believe the violence began with a confrontation between two groups of males inside the store. The dispute escalated into the parking lot, where two teenagers allegedly opened fire toward another group.

McDaniel was on the opposite end of the parking lot when he was struck.

In a particularly disturbing detail, police estimated that the gunfire came from at least 130 yards away, meaning the elderly shopper was more than a football field’s length from the shooter, according to WSB-TV.

Gainesville Police Capt. Kevin Holbrook described the terrifying danger created by people firing guns in a parking lot filled with shoppers and vehicles.

“Unfortunately, this gentleman just gets shot and killed just trying to live his everyday life,” Holbrook told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Authorities arrested 18-year-old Kamari Nehemiah Tilmuth of Gainesville on Sunday, October 18, after the Hall County SWAT Team executed a search warrant.

Tilmuth faces felony murder, four counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Police also identified 17-year-old Erron Lamar Dorsey of Gainesville as a second suspect. As of the latest publicly reported police update, Dorsey remained at large and was wanted on the same charges.

Both teenagers are accused of firing weapons during the confrontation. Authorities have not publicly established which gun fired the fatal shot. The charges remain allegations.

For McDaniel’s grieving family, the tragedy has left an enormous void.

His wife, Gloria McDaniel, told WSB-TV that her husband had spent much of his life serving others. He enlisted in the Navy shortly after turning 18, served during the Vietnam War era and later continued his military service in the Navy Reserve.

After his military career, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 23 years before retiring.

McDaniel and Gloria shared a relationship spanning decades and raised four children together.

His son, Ted McDaniel, remembered his father as a dedicated family man who took pride in his military service.

“He was just a good dad,” Ted told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Relatives described McDaniel as a loving husband, father and grandfather whose greatest happiness came from spending time with his family.

His wife also spoke about the painful reality of facing life without him, explaining that although relatives had gathered to support her, she feared the loneliness that would follow when everyone eventually returned home.

The family has established an online fundraiser to help with unexpected expenses and support Gloria following the sudden loss.

In an emotional statement, relatives said they were struggling through overwhelming grief and heartbreak.

The tragedy has also raised questions about how an argument between young people could escalate into gunfire in a crowded shopping center, killing someone who was not involved.

Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish said investigators were committed to identifying and arresting everyone responsible. The investigation has involved local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.

Police have urged anyone who knows Dorsey’s whereabouts not to approach him or attempt to apprehend him.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the wanted suspect is encouraged to contact the Gainesville Police Department at 770-533-5873.

For McDaniel’s family, what began as an ordinary shopping trip ended in a devastating loss that has forever changed their lives.
