Dentist Gunned Down by Patient Over ‘Loose Tooth’ Complaint

A routine visit to the dentist reportedly turned into a deadly confrontation when an angry Arizona man allegedly shot and killed his dentist over a loose tooth, setting off a manhunt that ended with the suspect dead and two police officers wounded.

The shocking attack unfolded October 15 in Nogales, Mexico, where 42-year-old dentist Amed de Jesús Preciado Hernández was fatally shot outside his workplace. Authorities identified the suspected gunman as Ernesto Rascón, 30, an American citizen from Prescott, Arizona, who reportedly had a criminal history in the United States.

According to investigators, Rascón had previously received dental treatments from Hernández but became furious after allegedly experiencing problems with one of his teeth. He blamed the dentist for leaving a tooth loose and arrived at his office demanding immediate attention.

When Hernández was unable to see him, the situation reportedly escalated. Instead of leaving, investigators say Rascón waited outside the medical facility until the dentist emerged and approached his white Ford pickup truck.

Surveillance footage captured what authorities described as a calculated ambush. As Hernández sat inside his vehicle, the gunman approached with a handgun and opened fire through the windshield before moving toward the driver’s side and firing additional shots.

The dentist suffered fatal injuries in the attack, leaving investigators searching for the man responsible for the brazen daylight killing.

Sonora’s Criminal Investigation Ministerial Agency (AMIC) quickly launched an investigation, reviewing surveillance footage and collecting evidence that helped authorities identify Rascón as their primary suspect.

By October 16, investigators had obtained an arrest warrant. Because Rascón was an American citizen with a reported criminal history in the United States, Mexican officials also coordinated with U.S. authorities as they worked to track him down.

Their search led them to a residence in the Ejidal 2 neighborhood of Agua Prieta, a Mexican border town directly across from Douglas, Arizona.

But when officers arrived on Saturday, October 17, to execute the warrant, they encountered another violent confrontation.

According to authorities, Rascón opened fire on the approaching officers, striking two members of the law enforcement team. One investigative agent suffered a grazing wound to the head, while a municipal police officer was wounded in the left leg.

Officers returned fire, fatally shooting Rascón at the scene. Both wounded officers received medical treatment and were subsequently reported to be out of danger.

AMIC Commissioner Carlos Alberto Flores later confirmed that Rascón had a criminal record in the United States, including drug-related offenses. Authorities have not publicly provided a complete accounting of his previous criminal cases.

Sonora prosecutors praised the officers involved in the dangerous operation for their professionalism and commitment to public safety, emphasizing that they continued carrying out their duties despite coming under gunfire.

The case has also drawn attention on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border because of the suspect’s American citizenship and the cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

Investigators believe the deadly confrontation stemmed from Rascón’s anger over a previous dental procedure, although they have not established that Hernández actually performed any treatment improperly.

What began as an apparent complaint over a loose tooth ultimately left a dentist dead, two officers injured and the suspected killer fatally shot during an attempted arrest just two days later.
