Iran ‘Plotting to Kill Americans’ as Trump Weighs Military Action

U.S. intelligence officials are warning that Iran has dramatically escalated efforts to target Americans overseas, with suspected assassination plots reaching what officials describe as an advanced stage.

The alarming assessment comes as President Donald Trump considers his next move against Tehran, raising the possibility of renewed American military strikes amid an increasingly dangerous standoff in the Middle East.

In an October 23 intelligence memo sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton warned that Iran had “substantially increased” its efforts to target U.S. personnel abroad.

“The lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries,” Clayton wrote.

The warning, first reported by Axios and subsequently confirmed by multiple news organizations, has prompted the Trump administration to take additional precautions to protect American diplomats and government employees.

The State Department is reducing personnel at U.S. embassies in Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Earlier this week, officials also ordered nonessential American personnel and their families to leave diplomatic facilities in Saudi Arabia amid growing threats from Iranian-backed Houthi militants.

Although the intelligence memo does not identify specific assassination targets or indicate when an attack might occur, officials consider the information serious enough to warrant broader security precautions.

Clayton has also offered to make additional intelligence available to State Department personnel who may be at risk.

The developments come eight months after American and Israeli forces launched coordinated attacks against Iran in February, beginning a conflict that has since spread across the region.

Despite a preliminary agreement reached in June, negotiations between Washington and Tehran have stalled. The United States continues to enforce a maritime blockade against Iran, while Iranian forces have threatened commercial shipping in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil, making any disruption a potential threat to energy supplies and gasoline prices worldwide.

Trump has maintained that Iran’s military and economy have been severely weakened by American operations, while repeatedly warning that Washington retains the ability to strike again.

Speaking to reporters Wednesday, the president described Iran as a failing nation and suggested the United States could bring the confrontation to a rapid conclusion if necessary.

The possibility of another military offensive is becoming increasingly significant.

According to ABC News, American and Israeli military officials have developed plans for possible renewed attacks on Iranian targets, including petrochemical operations and nuclear facilities. Two Israeli sources familiar with the discussions indicated that any coordinated strikes would likely occur after the November 3 midterm elections.

However, the White House has emphasized that no American strikes will take place before the elections, and no decision to launch another offensive has been publicly announced.

During a Friday campaign rally in Florida, Trump again raised the possibility of military action while leaving open the door to a negotiated settlement.

The president’s approach places renewed pressure on Tehran at a time when Iran is confronting economic difficulties, military setbacks and growing tensions with neighboring countries.

Yet the risks remain substantial. Iran-backed Houthi forces have repeatedly attacked Saudi infrastructure, and another confrontation could threaten American personnel, regional allies and global energy markets.

For Washington, the immediate priority is protecting Americans who may already be in danger.

The intelligence warning also underscores a broader challenge facing the Trump administration: determining how to confront Iran’s reported threats without allowing the conflict to expand into an even more costly regional war.

With diplomatic talks stalled, American forces on alert and intelligence officials warning of potentially deadly plots, the coming weeks could prove decisive for U.S. policy toward Iran.
