Stevie Wonder Sues to Evict Reported Ex After 38 Years of Living Rent-Free

A nearly 40-year rent-free living arrangement has erupted into a bitter legal battle, with music legend Stevie Wonder taking a woman he was reportedly once engaged to to court in an effort to reclaim his Los Angeles home.

The 76-year-old Grammy-winning singer has filed an eviction lawsuit against Carmen Efferson, who has allegedly lived in his three-bedroom California property without paying a dime in rent since July 1988.

According to court documents filed Thursday, October 22, Wonder and Efferson reached a verbal agreement nearly four decades ago allowing her to occupy the home rent-free. There was no written lease, and the monthly rent was reportedly set at zero.

But the extraordinary arrangement began unraveling this summer when a dispute over an insurance inspection escalated into a heated confrontation between Efferson and Wonder’s attorneys.

The trouble reportedly started in July, when the singer’s representatives attempted to arrange an inspection of the property to maintain its insurance coverage. Efferson allegedly refused to allow anyone inside, despite repeated requests.

In an email dated July 25, Efferson accused one of Wonder’s attorneys of displaying a racist and condescending attitude. She also said she felt harassed and would not consent to the inspection.

The disagreement intensified when Efferson warned that she would contact police if Wonder’s representatives attempted to enter the property without her permission.

Wonder’s legal team responded by issuing a 30-day notice on July 28, ordering Efferson to vacate the home by August 27. According to the lawsuit, she refused to leave.

The situation reportedly grew even more serious when Wonder’s attorneys claimed the inability to inspect the house resulted in the cancellation of its insurance policy, leaving the property exposed to potentially significant financial losses.

On October 6, attorneys issued another notice giving Efferson three days to leave. When the dispute remained unresolved, Wonder took the matter to Los Angeles Superior Court.

The singer is now asking a judge to terminate the decades-old verbal agreement, order Efferson’s eviction and award attorney fees and statutory damages of up to $600. His attorneys have characterized her continued occupancy as malicious, an allegation that has not been established by the court.

Adding another layer to the unusual dispute is the pair’s reported romantic history. Efferson was allegedly engaged to Wonder during the late 1980s, around the time she first moved into the home. However, details surrounding their relationship and eventual separation remain unclear.

Wonder has since moved on with his personal life and has been married to Tomeeka Robyn Bracy since 2017.

The legal showdown comes as the legendary performer celebrates the 50th anniversary of his landmark album Songs in the Key of Life, a major milestone in a career spanning more than six decades.

Neither Efferson nor Wonder’s representatives had publicly provided a detailed response to the latest lawsuit as of Friday.

For now, a living arrangement that reportedly survived 38 years without a monthly rent payment has become an increasingly contentious courtroom fight, with a judge ultimately expected to decide whether Efferson must surrender the home she has occupied since the Reagan administration.
