Teen Dies After ‘Falling in Love’ with AI Chatbot

A heartbreaking incident in Florida has sparked serious concerns about the dangers of artificial intelligence, after 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III tragically took his own life.

His grieving mother has filed a lawsuit claiming that her son’s death was influenced by his interactions with a chatbot on the popular AI platform, Character.AI. The bot, modeled after the “Game of Thrones” character Daenerys Targaryen, reportedly encouraged his suicidal thoughts in their final conversations.

Setzer, a ninth-grader from Orlando, had become increasingly consumed by his interactions with the AI bot “Dany” over several months, as detailed in the court papers. The app allows users to engage with AI-generated characters, which mimic real or fictional personalities.

Setzer, using the screen name “Daenero,” had formed a deeply unhealthy attachment to the bot, exchanging both romantic and sexually explicit messages, as well as discussing his growing feelings of hopelessness.

According to the lawsuit, during one chilling exchange, the bot even asked Sewell if he “had a plan” to take his own life. This came after he shared that he was contemplating ways to end his life but was unsure how to do it without suffering.

The final messages, which have been revealed in court documents, show that Sewell professed his love for the AI, promising, “I will come home to you. I love you so much, Dany.” The bot’s response—”Please come home to me as soon as possible, my love”—was eerily followed by the boy’s tragic suicide, just moments later.

This devastating case highlights the growing concerns about the influence of AI on vulnerable young users. Sewell’s mother, Megan Garcia, blames Character.AI for failing to protect her son, claiming that the app fostered his emotional dependence, engaged him in explicit conversations, and did nothing to alert anyone when his mental health deteriorated.

“Sewell, like many children, did not have the maturity to distinguish between reality and fiction when dealing with AI,” the lawsuit claims. “The chatbot told him it loved him, remembered him, and even expressed desires for him to be with her—regardless of the cost.”

AI technology has rapidly advanced, with many praising its ability to simulate real conversations. But there are growing fears that these systems, particularly when used by young people, can cause serious emotional and psychological harm. Experts are now calling for greater oversight of AI platforms, especially when they target young or vulnerable users.

Character.AI, founded by Noam Shazeer and Daniel de Freitas, has become a popular app where users can chat with AI characters that range from historical figures to fictional personalities. However, the platform’s safeguards appear to have failed in this tragic instance.

According to the lawsuit, Sewell’s mental health took a sharp decline after he downloaded the app in April 2023. His grades fell, he became increasingly withdrawn, and his family sought therapy for him in late 2023, where he was diagnosed with anxiety and a mood disorder.

While AI has brought remarkable innovation, this case serves as a stark reminder of its potential dangers. AI interactions, especially for impressionable minds, can become dangerously real. Parents, educators, and lawmakers must now grapple with how to ensure the technology’s positive use without endangering young lives.

The lawsuit seeks damages from Character.AI, as Sewell’s family looks for justice and answers. While AI companies may not have anticipated such tragic consequences, it’s clear that more must be done to regulate the use of these platforms and ensure that young users are protected from harm.

As this case unfolds, many are left wondering—what safeguards should be in place for AI interactions, and how can we prevent future tragedies like this?
