Top Democratic donor Calls Harris campaign a “$1 billion disaster”

A top Democratic donor is pulling no punches after Vice President Kamala Harris’ failed campaign, calling it a “$1 billion disaster” and questioning the accountability of the campaign’s leadership. Lindy Li, a member of the Democratic National Committee’s finance committee, didn’t hold back on Fox & Friends Weekend when discussing the fallout from the 2024 presidential race.

Li’s frustration was clear as she reflected on how Harris’ campaign went from a promising frontrunner to a financial and electoral failure. “The truth is, this is just an epic disaster,” Li bluntly declared. “A $1 billion disaster.” She went on to criticize how the funds were handled and the misleading narrative that had been sold to donors like herself.

The campaign had raised over $1 billion, but filings show the Harris-Walz ticket was deep in debt—$20 million in the hole after the election. Li pointed out that she personally helped raise millions for the campaign, but now she finds herself scrambling to explain the outcome to her donors. “I have friends I have to be accountable to and explain what happened because I told them it was a margin-of-error race,” Li said.

Li’s ire isn’t just directed at the campaign’s financial woes, but at the way the entire situation unfolded. She’s especially critical of President Joe Biden’s handling of the situation. In a candid moment, she suggested that Biden’s late-stage exit from the race and quick endorsement of Harris was a “f— you” to the Democratic Party. “If you don’t want me, here’s somebody you may not like, deal with it,” she said. “Kind of like sticking it to the man.”

Biden, 81, had abruptly dropped out of the race in July after a rocky debate performance, leading to speculation about internal Democratic strife. His endorsement of Harris, who quickly became the party’s nominee, was seen by some as a quick fix to the party’s instability. Yet, Li was blindsided by how fast it happened. “I was promised… Jen O’Malley Dillon promised all of us that Harris would win,” she lamented. “I believed her, my donors believed her, and so they wrote massive checks. I feel like a lot of us were misled.”

Jen O’Malley Dillon, Harris’ campaign chair, had previously assured donors that Harris was on track for victory, but the loss has sparked widespread finger-pointing within the party. In a memo to staffers, O’Malley Dillon acknowledged the campaign’s struggles, saying, “You stared down unprecedented headwinds and obstacles that were largely out of our control. We knew this would be a margin-of-error race, and it was.”

The aftermath of Harris’ loss has led to intense frustration within the Democratic Party. Li, who once supported Biden’s candidacy, now feels disillusioned. Even more troubling is the toll the loss has taken on the party’s donors. As the blame game intensifies, the fallout from this election could have lasting consequences on future Democratic campaigns.

On the other side, Donald Trump, 78, claimed a decisive victory in 2024, capturing all seven battleground states and securing the largest popular vote total ever for a Republican candidate. His victory sets the stage for another four years in the White House, further deepening the divide between the two major political parties.

As Li and others in the Democratic establishment continue to process the loss, one thing is clear: the political landscape is changing. Democrats will need to regroup and re-strategize if they hope to reclaim power in future elections. But for now, the blame for this election’s fallout rests squarely on the shoulders of the Harris campaign and its leadership.

  1. Top Democrat donor should have stopped listening to the biased media and paid more attention to the people who were suffering Biden/Harris\’ induced inflation and other BS onto the real people of America, then Top donor wouldn\’t have blown his/her money in a $ billion disaster; PEOPLE VOTE, money doesn\’t!

  3. Dear Lindy, you were sold a bill of fake goods. As you go to collect more money for the Dems, I do hope that your contributors remember the moves you put on them this time around. You might want to reconsider your own position in all this.

Listening to the people, instead of being pushed towards doing something for an elite group of manipulators as you did would help. Hint: You might reconsider your position of being a Dem. Last I heard, the Republican party now represents the people. Just saying….

    1. I love how the Democratic Party leaders and donors are all assigning blame and shirking responsibility. The fact of the matter is, there is no way that any of these people didn’t know that they were gambling on a lame duck, inexperienced candidate who was thrown into the race with only a few months to campaign. Harris also was not popular with people, including many in her own party. Pelosi didn’t even like her! party leaders like Pelosi, who once again tried to rig the election and browbeat ol Joe into dropping out, are the ones to blame. And if Biden gave an FU to the party over it, he has my respect!

  4. The Dem party’s top donors and leaders should take responsibility for their own actions in trying to throw an unpopular, inexperienced, narcissistic candidate into the election who had less than 3 months to mount a campaign. Party leaders like Pelosi browbeat Biden into dropping out and tried to rig the election again by not even having the DNC nominate Harris. If Biden F’ed the party by endorsing Harris, it’s their own fault and he now has my respect! Everyone but the DP could see that she had no policy and couldn’t answer simple questions about how she intended to lead this country. If her donors couldn’t see that for themselves, they shouldn’t be writing checks! That shows the intelligence of people with more money than sense.
