Elon Musk Tasked With Running New Government Agency

In a bold move to overhaul Washington, President-elect Donald Trump has tapped two of the business world’s most influential figures, billionaire tech titan Elon Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, to lead his newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Their task? To slash bureaucracy, cut wasteful spending, and revolutionize the structure of federal agencies, an undertaking Trump has likened to the storied “Manhattan Project.”

Announcing the appointments Tuesday evening, Trump emphasized the gravity of the project. “This is not just reform—it’s a revolution,” he declared, promising the endeavor would create an “entrepreneurial approach to government like never before.” Musk and Ramaswamy, known for their outspoken criticism of bureaucratic inefficiencies, bring their unique perspectives from Silicon Valley and biotech to what is arguably the most ambitious government overhaul plan in modern U.S. history.

“DOGE” – A Longtime Republican Dream

Republicans have long aimed to shrink the federal government and rein in excess regulations. Trump’s announcement frames the Department of Government Efficiency as a long-sought conservative vision coming to life. “It’s about making life better for all Americans,” Trump said, adding that the duo’s work would combat the estimated $6.5 trillion in annual government spending he claims is rife with waste and fraud.

“By July 4, 2026,” Trump promised, “we’ll deliver a leaner, more efficient government to mark America’s 250th anniversary of independence—a perfect gift to ‘We the People.’” This ambitious deadline has garnered praise from supporters and skepticism from critics who question whether such sweeping reform can be achieved in under two years.

Musk and Ramaswamy Respond

Ramaswamy, founder of Roivant Sciences, reacted to the news in a characteristically bold post on X, writing, “We will not go gently, Elon Musk.” The tech visionary and the biotech entrepreneur have both previously expressed a deep-seated desire to shake up the status quo in Washington. Ramaswamy, who recently suspended his Senate bid in Ohio, stated, “Yes, this means I’m withdrawing from consideration for the Ohio Senate appointment,” referencing the open seat vacated by Sen. J.D. Vance. “I’ll do everything I can to support Ohio, no matter what.”

Musk’s statement was equally impassioned. Known for his dramatic opinions on social and political issues, Musk posted, “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!” The world’s richest man, who endorsed Trump earlier this year following a near-assassination attempt on the president, has become a vocal critic of what he calls “the machine” of Washington bureaucracy.

Building Trump’s Cabinet: A Conservative Dream Team

Trump’s latest appointments mark a continuation of his strategy to enlist high-profile conservatives to his administration. Alongside Musk and Ramaswamy, reports indicate that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is being considered for Secretary of State, while South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem is expected to head the Department of Homeland Security. Additionally, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik has been tapped as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee is reportedly set to serve as Ambassador to Israel.

With Musk and Ramaswamy taking the helm at DOGE, Trump is signaling a full-court press on reimagining the federal government. “We’re not just building a Cabinet—we’re building a new era for America,” Trump said at a rally following the announcement, vowing to continue to fill top positions with those “not afraid to take on the system.”

Whether Musk and Ramaswamy can translate their ambitious goals into reality remains to be seen, but with both men’s records of challenging norms and disrupting industries, one thing is clear: the White House is poised for a seismic shift.
