In a surprise turn of events, President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi would be his nominee for U.S. Attorney General, replacing Congressman Matt Gaetz, who withdrew earlier in the day. Bondi, a seasoned prosecutor with nearly 20 years of experience, earned national recognition for her role in combating the opioid crisis. She previously served on Trump’s Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during his first term. “We saved many lives,” Trump said of their collaboration, “and she’ll do it again on a national scale.”

Gaetz’s Exit Amid Rising Tensions

Gaetz, a staunch Trump ally, stepped aside following mounting scrutiny over allegations of misconduct. “While the momentum was strong, it became clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump-Vance transition,” Gaetz said in a statement Thursday.

The decision to step aside followed reports of the House Ethics Committee deliberating on releasing findings of an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct involving Gaetz. CNN reported Thursday that the committee had reviewed claims of a second alleged sexual encounter with a 17-year-old in 2017.
