Will Elon Musk Buy MSNBC

Tech magnate Elon Musk, never one to shy away from controversy, sparked a media frenzy with a tongue-in-cheek post on his X platform (formerly Twitter), suggesting he might buy MSNBC. The playful post followed reports that Comcast, the parent company of MSNBC, plans to spin off its cable channels into a new entity called SpinCo.

In his characteristic style, Musk shared a provocative meme showing a priest resisting temptation, labeled as “Elon Musk trying not to buy,” next to an MSNBC logo superimposed on a scantily clad figure. Accompanying the image, Musk wrote, “And lead us not into temptation ….”

The post quickly garnered attention, fueling speculation about whether the world’s richest man might be serious about acquiring the liberal-leaning cable network. This isn’t the first time Musk has used humor to tease big moves—his jokes about purchasing Twitter preceded his actual $44 billion acquisition of the platform in 2022.

Comcast’s Bold Move Creates Uncertainty

Comcast’s rumored spin-off plan includes MSNBC, along with CNBC, Oxygen, E!, Syfy, and the Golf Channel. The decision is part of a larger restructuring effort as the media giant adapts to the rapidly changing landscape of cable television.

The move has sent shockwaves through MSNBC’s newsroom. “Everyone is in a panic because everything is up in the air,” one source at the network reportedly told The New York Post.

Critics of MSNBC have been quick to weigh in on the channel’s future. The network is home to liberal stalwarts like Rachel Maddow, Joy Reid, and Lawrence O’Donnell, whose progressive programming has made MSNBC a lightning rod in political discourse.

Trump Jr. and Rogan Join the Fray

Musk’s post drew reactions from high-profile figures, including Donald Trump Jr., who encouraged the billionaire to take the plunge. “Hey @elonmusk, I have the funniest idea ever!!!” Trump Jr. wrote on X. Musk replied in kind, “The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely.”

Podcast host Joe Rogan joined the conversation, quipping, “If you buy MSNBC, I would like Rachel Maddow’s job. I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies.” Musk cheekily responded, “Deal.”

Musk’s Growing Political Influence

While Musk appears to be joking for now, his increasing entanglement in politics adds weight to his remarks. In the wake of the recent presidential election, Musk has been a frequent guest at Mar-a-Lago, meeting with President-elect Donald Trump and his allies to discuss potential overhauls of the federal government.

Known for his disdain for what he calls the “woke mind virus,” Musk has frequently clashed with mainstream media outlets, accusing them of bias and pushing agendas. His recent post could be seen as part of a broader campaign to challenge legacy media.

From Jokes to Reality?

Though Musk has an estimated net worth of $348 billion, according to Bloomberg, it’s unclear whether he would seriously consider acquiring MSNBC. However, history shows that Musk’s humor often precedes action. In 2017, he casually asked, “How much is it?” about Twitter—a deal he eventually completed five years later.

For now, Musk’s antics have added fuel to speculation about the future of MSNBC, leaving fans and critics alike wondering: Is this just another joke, or could Musk pull off another media coup?

The Post reached out to MSNBC for comment but has yet to receive a response.
