This Thanksgiving Staple is Banned in Other Countries

Stove Top Stuffing, a Thanksgiving staple in millions of American homes, is facing scrutiny over two controversial ingredients—BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene)—that are banned in several countries for their potential health risks. Despite being a beloved side dish for over 50 years, the boxed mix contains preservatives linked to cancer and other health concerns, raising questions about food safety regulations in the United States.

A Beloved Tradition with a Hidden Secret

Invented in 1972 by General Foods’ Ruth M. Siems, Stove Top Stuffing quickly became a holiday favorite. It’s a quick, convenient alternative to homemade stuffing, selling an estimated 60 million boxes each Thanksgiving. The recipe, which combines bread, spices, and preservatives like BHA and BHT, has remained largely unchanged.

These additives extend the shelf life of processed foods, but they’re also classified as human carcinogens in some studies. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) deems them safe in small amounts, they’re banned in the European Union, the UK, and Japan due to cancer risks.

“A lot of countries have much stricter rules around what’s allowed in food,” said Dr. Neha Pathak, MD, a member of WebMD’s Medical Team, in an interview. “BHA, for instance, is recognized even in the U.S. as a potential carcinogen. The evidence is mounting, and it’s concerning.”

What Are BHA and BHT?

BHA and BHT are synthetic preservatives used in a variety of processed foods, from cereals and snacks to butter and gum. They work by preventing oxidation, which keeps food from spoiling. However, their safety has been debated for decades.

“There are animal studies that show high doses of BHA can lead to tumor development in rats and hamsters,” said Dr. Pathak. “It’s classified as ‘reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.’”

These chemicals may also act as endocrine disruptors, potentially interfering with hormonal functions and reproductive health. “We’re still studying the downstream effects, but the risks could include issues like fertility problems or early menstruation,” Dr. Pathak explained.

A Broader Problem in the U.S. Food System

While Stove Top Stuffing is under the microscope, Dr. Pathak emphasized that the issue extends beyond this one product. An estimated 70% of the American diet consists of ultra-processed foods, many of which contain additives like BHA and BHT.

“This is just one example of the chemicals we’re consuming regularly,” she said. “It’s not about the stuffing you eat one day a year—it’s about what we’re putting into our bodies year-round.”

Industry and Consumer Perspectives

Kraft Heinz, the parent company of Stove Top Stuffing, defended its product in a statement:
“For over 50 years, Stove Top Stuffing has been a trusted favorite on family meal tables. Every box is crafted with care, following the same high-quality standards that we use across every one of our brands, while also exceeding the strict safety guidelines set by government agencies. We will proudly serve Stove Top to our families this Thanksgiving.”

Dr. Pathak, however, urged consumers to take a closer look at labels. “We don’t need to stress over every single thing we eat, but we can start making incremental changes,” she advised. “Understanding what’s in our food is the first step.”

  1. ALlL KING TRUMP AKA HITLER FOR MAKING FOOD OUT OF SIGHT FOR POOR PEOPLE, IT LEAST THE BLUE BLOODS EXCUSE ME THE RICH CAN AFFORD 10.99 FOR A DOZEN EGGS,7.99 FOR A GALLON OF MILK 25.00 DOLLARS A POUND FOR ROAST, HAMBURG. CHICKEN, YOU NAME IT. ALL HELL KING TRUMP AKA HITLER

  2. That’s understandable then. This country is known to have a govt so sold out to Capitalist rule (research has confirmed “oligarchy” is what we’re living in — the very definition of such a society) that this isn’t surprising. Other countries outlaw our harmful food additives known to cause health problems — as they should. We shouldn’t be so unethical & irresponsible as to try to sell it to them in the first place.
