A California hospital was thrown into lockdown Wednesday morning after a bizarre and dangerous confrontation involving a machete-wielding man ended with police opening fire just outside Long Beach.
The chaotic scene unfolded shortly after 10 a.m. near Los Alamitos, where authorities say the Long Beach Fire Department reported that a car was following one of its vehicles and brake-checking it near East Willow Street and Palo Verde Avenue.
What began as a disturbing road rage and possible DUI call quickly spiraled into a much more serious public safety threat.
According to authorities, the fire department alerted Long Beach police, who responded and attempted to pull over the suspect. Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly fled east toward UCI Health — Los Alamitos, located near Katella Avenue and East Willow Street.
After a short pursuit, the suspect got out of his vehicle near the medical center — and police say he was armed with a machete.
The threat immediately triggered a major law enforcement response. Officers called in a SWAT team, and the hospital was placed on lockdown as authorities tried to contain the situation near the medical campus.
The standoff unfolded near the intersection of East Willow Street and Cherry Avenue, just outside hospital grounds. Crisis negotiators were brought in and attempted to persuade the man to surrender peacefully, Los Alamitos Police Department Support Services Manager Robert Acosta told NBC.
But the suspect allegedly refused to comply.
Police initially tried to bring the situation under control using less-lethal rounds, described as similar to bean bags, but authorities said those efforts failed. The situation took an even more dangerous turn when the man began moving toward officers.
That is when police opened fire.
No Long Beach police officers were injured in the incident, authorities said.
Footage from the scene appeared to show the shirtless suspect running from officers as gunfire erupted just feet from the hospital campus, turning an ordinary weekday morning into a terrifying emergency for patients, staff and families nearby.
The suspect was taken to UCI Health — Los Alamitos in critical condition.
The shooting comes amid renewed concerns across California about public safety, repeat confrontations with law enforcement, and the risks faced by first responders when routine calls suddenly escalate into life-or-death situations.
For the hospital and nearby community, what started as an alleged road rage incident ended with a lockdown, a police shooting, and a suspect fighting for his life.
