FAA Fears Drone Attacks on Trump

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has imposed temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) over central New Jersey following reports of unusual drone activity near President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf club and the nearby Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. Army research hub.

The restrictions, initiated on November 18 at the request of federal security agencies, aim to address safety concerns surrounding the unauthorized use of drones in sensitive airspace.

Restricted Zones: Bedminster and Picatinny Arsenal

One TFR includes the airspace above Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Somerset County, a frequent destination for Trump. The other restriction covers the Picatinny Arsenal, a key military site in Dover, New Jersey, renowned for weapons research and development.

These restrictions will remain in place over Bedminster through the end of this week, while the Picatinny Arsenal ban extends until December 26.

“Safely integrating drones into the National Airspace System is a key priority for the FAA,” the agency emphasized in a statement, noting that violations can lead to hefty fines of up to $75,000 or even certification revocation.

Surge in Drone Sightings Raises Alarm

The drone sightings, which began mid-November, have spurred investigations by federal and local law enforcement. Reports of up to five drones simultaneously flying over areas near Bedminster, Mendham, and Parsippany have drawn heightened scrutiny.

One Parsippany resident told local media, “It was surreal to see so many drones overhead on Sunday night. It’s not something you expect in a quiet suburban area.”

While authorities say there is no immediate danger to the public, they urge residents to capture clear photographs of any drones they encounter to aid investigations.

Morris County Sheriff James Gannon reassured the public, stating, “At this time, there is no advisable immediate danger to the public.” Meanwhile, the FBI’s Newark field office and New Jersey State Police are actively probing the incidents.

Drones: A Growing Concern for Security

The uptick in drone activity near Trump’s property coincides with sightings of unidentified drones at military installations in the United Kingdom. Bases housing advanced aircraft like F-15 and F-35 fighter jets have reported “swarms of small drones,” prompting heightened security measures by both British and U.S. forces.

Though no assets or personnel were impacted during these incursions, the Pentagon has confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation.

Broader Implications

The use of drones in sensitive areas raises broader questions about national security and the challenges of regulating new technologies.

“Every incident like this reminds us how important it is to safeguard critical airspace,” a Pentagon official stated.

The incidents have also drawn parallels to disruptions in civilian spaces, such as a September Green Day concert in Detroit. In that case, the band paused their performance after a drone was spotted overhead, resulting in a brief evacuation and the detention of an individual by police.

As investigations unfold, federal and local authorities continue to treat these incidents with high priority, emphasizing the importance of public vigilance and reporting.
