Famous CEO Shot Dead in Manhattan

Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance division, was fatally shot Wednesday morning outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan in what police are calling a targeted attack.

Early Morning Ambush

Thompson had just arrived at the hotel at approximately 6:46 a.m., preparing for UnitedHealth’s Investor Day conference. A masked gunman, reportedly lying in wait, opened fire on Thompson, hitting him multiple times in the chest before fleeing the scene, police sources revealed.

Emergency responders rushed Thompson to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A Brazen Act in Midtown

Witnesses described the assailant as a white male wearing a cream-colored jacket, a black face mask, black and white sneakers, and carrying a gray backpack. He was seen loitering near the Hilton on 6th Avenue before the shooting.

The suspect allegedly fired from a distance and then fled through the nearby Ziegfeld alleyway, escaping on a bicycle.

The NYPD is treating the case as a targeted attack but has not yet identified a suspect. “We are pursuing all leads,” an NYPD spokesperson said.

Impact on UnitedHealth

The shooting sent shockwaves through UnitedHealth Group, one of America’s largest corporations. Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth’s parent company, called off the Investor Day conference, citing “a very serious medical situation” involving a team member.

Witty later issued a statement mourning Thompson’s death, describing him as “a dedicated leader and colleague who had an immeasurable impact on our company and industry.”

A Distinguished Career

Thompson had been with UnitedHealth for over 20 years and became CEO of its insurance division in 2021. Based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, he was instrumental in overseeing government programs, including Medicare and retirement services.

Prior to UnitedHealth, Thompson worked at PwC, an auditing and accounting firm, for six years. He lived in a $1 million home in Minnesota with his family.

UnitedHealth Group, ranked fourth on the Fortune 500 list, employs over 100,000 people nationwide.

Police Investigation Intensifies

Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and appealing to witnesses for additional information. “If you saw anything or recognize the suspect, please come forward,” urged a police official.

A bottle of pills found near the scene has also been taken as evidence, though its connection to the crime remains unclear.

The brazen daylight attack has left Midtown rattled and sparked questions about safety even in one of New York’s busiest neighborhoods.

As investigations continue, the death of Brian Thompson marks a shocking and tragic moment for one of the nation’s leading healthcare companies.
