In the heart of New York City, one of the most audacious crimes in recent memory unfolded—a broad daylight assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The chilling scene outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan left a trail of bullet casings, cryptic messages, and surveillance footage that has captivated the nation.
The Crime
Thompson was gunned down on the bustling sidewalks of Midtown Manhattan. Surveillance footage shows a masked assailant calmly approaching the CEO from behind before raising a handgun and opening fire. In a shocking twist, the gun jammed mid-attack, forcing the shooter to re-engage the weapon as Thompson tried to flee. The gunman then escaped, weaving through traffic on a bicycle and disappearing into Central Park.
The Suspect
The NYPD has now released surveillance images of the suspect—a man seen smiling and waiting in line at a Starbucks shortly before the shooting. A Brazilian tourist staying at a nearby hostel believes the suspect may have been in the room next to his. These images, coupled with the suspect’s apparent familiarity with Manhattan’s streets and escape routes, have raised questions about the calculated nature of the attack.
The Cryptic Messages
Adding to the intrigue are the words inscribed on the bullet casings left at the scene: “deny,” “depose,” and “defend.” Investigators believe these may reference legal or insurance-related themes, sparking speculation about a potential motive tied to Thompson’s role as CEO of one of America’s largest healthcare companies.
Technology and Leads
Paul Mauro, a crime analyst, has noted that modern forensic tools, including facial recognition, are likely to play a pivotal role in identifying the killer. NYPD detectives are also analyzing a cellphone and discarded Starbucks cup found near the crime scene, while the hostel’s checkered floor pattern—a detail captured in surveillance footage—has drawn further scrutiny.
UnitedHealth Group Responds
UnitedHealth Group issued a statement expressing shock and grief over the loss of its CEO, calling Thompson a “respected colleague and friend.” The company has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement during the investigation.
Public Safety Concerns
The brazen nature of this assassination, coupled with the eerie messages left behind, has shaken New Yorkers. Security has been heightened across the city, including at the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting, as authorities race against time to apprehend the suspect.
The Road Ahead
As the manhunt enters its second day, questions linger: Was this an act of personal vendetta, corporate retaliation, or something even darker? One thing is certain—the killer left behind clues, and it’s only a matter of time before justice catches up.

I don’t know. It is New York City. If he was Trump, a Trump supporter or a parent at a school board meeting, they wouldn’t rest until they got him. I’m not sure they will put too much effort into actually finding the murderer.
