FBI Arrests Dem Official on Serious Charges

In a stunning turn of events, Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson was arrested on Friday morning by FBI agents on charges of public corruption. Anderson, who represents District 7 encompassing Roxbury, Dorchester, Fenway, and part of the South End, faces multiple charges, including five counts of wire fraud and one count of theft involving federal funds.

Federal prosecutors allege that Anderson engaged in a scheme to defraud the city by hiring a relative to her staff and orchestrating a plan where the individual would receive inflated compensation but would secretly return most of the money to Anderson.

Court documents paint a damning picture. In one incident described in the filing, Anderson allegedly arranged for $7,000 in cash to be handed to her in a City Hall bathroom. On June 9, 2023, her staff member reportedly texted her, “Bathroom,” signaling the cash handoff. Anderson replied “Ready,” confirming the arrangement, prosecutors allege.

Financial Troubles and Ethical Violations
The case against Anderson is compounded by allegations of personal financial struggles. Prosecutors claim she faced mounting financial pressures, including overdue rent, car payments, overdraft fees, and a $5,000 fine from the Massachusetts Ethics Commission. These struggles, they allege, motivated her to engage in illegal activity.

This is not the first ethical violation tied to Anderson. In 2022, she hired two relatives for paid positions, a clear violation of city regulations. She was later fined $5,000 for this act. More recently, the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance accused her campaign of accepting donations over legal limits and failing to file timely deposit records.

FBI Responds
“Her behavior, as alleged in today’s indictment, is a slap in the face to the hardworking taxpayers of Boston,” said Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston office. “The FBI, alongside our partners, is committed to rooting out public corruption and restoring trust in government.”

A Historic Career Now Tainted
Fernandes Anderson made history in 2021 as the first African immigrant and Muslim-American elected to the Boston City Council. However, these allegations cast a long shadow over her trailblazing tenure.

The charges are a severe blow to her constituents, many of whom looked to Anderson as a symbol of progress and representation. If convicted, Anderson faces severe penalties and a tarnished legacy, as the city grapples with yet another high-profile corruption scandal.

  1. WHY IS IT THAT THE NEW FEMALE POLITICIANS WHO ARE NON WHITE HAVE BEEN STEALING THE PEOPLE’S MONIES IN UNDERHANDED DEALINGS ONCE THEY GET INTO OFFICE. DID THEY TAKE A 101 COURSE IN DEMOCRATS “HOW TO STEAL AND GET AWAY WITH IT” OR “JUST DON’E GET CAUGHT” AND YOU WILL BE OK. PEOPLE, CHECK THE MORONS THAT ARE RUNNING FOR OFFICE IN YOUR STATE OR TOWN OR CITY BEFORE YOU VOTE NEXT TIME. IT WILL SAVE A LOT OF TAXPAYERS MONEY FROM BEING WASTED.

  2. She’ll be throwing out the race card shortly. Maybe the liberal mayor should fill her office with one of her illegal immigrants.

  3. Well is a typical thing. Nothing new here. Is a demokrap thing.
