New Jersey residents are on edge as mysterious drones continue to swarm the skies, fueling theories that they may be linked to missing radioactive material. Officials remain divided on the matter, with some warning of a troubling connection and others downplaying any potential danger.
The strange saga began earlier this month when the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) reported a small shipment of radioactive material had gone missing in transit. The equipment, a Germanium-68 “pin source” used for PET cancer scanners, vanished on December 2. The container, shipped from the Nazha Cancer Center in Newfield, Gloucester County, arrived damaged and empty. Though the NRC assured the public the amount of radioactive material was too small to cause harm, the incident sparked widespread concern.
Belleville Mayor Michael Melham is one of the loudest voices raising alarm. Speaking on Fox TV’s Good Day New York, Melham said the grid-like drone patterns seen over Essex County suggest a coordinated search effort.
“What might they be looking for? Maybe that’s radioactive material,” Melham speculated.
Thousands of drone sightings have been reported across New Jersey over the past month, with residents sharing videos and theories on social media. Some claim the drones appear to be scanning specific areas, possibly using advanced detection technology. A heat map released by New Jersey State Police revealed a staggering number of sightings concentrated in certain counties, adding to the unease.
John Ferguson, CEO of a Kansas-based remote aircraft company, weighed in on the situation in a video that has since gone viral with nearly 3 million views on X (formerly Twitter).
“The only reason you would ever fly an unmanned aircraft at night is if you’re looking for something,” Ferguson said, suggesting the drones may be searching for gas leaks, radioactive material, or another undisclosed target. He emphasized, however, that the drones likely do not pose a threat to public safety.
Federal officials have offered mixed responses. The FBI, alongside other federal agencies, issued a joint statement acknowledging over 5,000 drone-related tips in recent weeks. They claim most reports are linked to commercial or hobbyist drones, manned aircraft, or even mistaken sightings of stars.
“We recognize the concern among many communities,” the statement read. “We continue to support state and local authorities with advanced detection technology.”
Despite reassurances, many remain unconvinced. Lawmakers, including New Jersey Rep. Jeff Van Drew, have called for answers. Van Drew went so far as to suggest the drones may originate from an Iranian mothership – a claim the Pentagon firmly denies.
The Biden administration has also faced backlash for its muted response. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has downplayed the situation, stating most sightings are likely misidentified planes or helicopters.
Yet concerns persist, especially after a medical helicopter was forced to reroute earlier this month due to drone interference. Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan added fuel to the fire, posting videos of drones circling over his suburban Washington, D.C., home.
Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have announced they are ramping up their response, deploying infrared cameras and advanced drone detection technology to assess any potential threats.
The drone mystery has even caught the attention of cultural figures like podcast host Joe Rogan, who admitted Ferguson’s viral video left him “very concerned.”
For now, the skies over New Jersey remain crowded, and the missing radioactive material remains unaccounted for. Residents are left with more questions than answers as officials scramble to get a handle on the situation.
“If they’re looking for something, I’d like to know what it is,” Mayor Melham said, echoing the concerns of a growing number of New Jerseyans.
With federal agencies promising further investigations, all eyes remain fixed on the skies – and on the mystery that continues to unfold.

Just more incompetence from the Biden administration.
Anything stated by the current administration regarding the drones will only be some made-up fantasy story, so don’t even bother demanding information from them.
