Vice President Kamala Harris issued an urgent call for U.S. leaders to recommit to tackling gun violence after a tragic school shooting in Wisconsin claimed the lives of a teacher and a teenage student. Speaking in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Harris emphasized the nation’s collective grief and the pressing need for action.
“It’s another school shooting, another community being torn apart by gun violence,” Harris said. “Our nation mourns for those who were killed and for those who were injured. We as a nation must renew our commitment to end the horror of gun violence, both mass shootings and the daily tragedies that touch so many communities.”
Harris’s remarks mark her most extensive public comments since conceding the election to President-elect Donald Trump. The current administration has implemented incremental changes to gun laws but has stopped short of enacting broader measures such as a ban on military-style weapons or universal background checks, both of which Harris has long advocated.
Gun control was a key issue during the campaign, though often overshadowed by debates over abortion and the economy. President-elect Trump, who centered his campaign on inflation and illegal immigration, used these themes to galvanize voters and secure his victory.
Speculation Grows as Biden and Harris Cancel Travel Plans
Amid ongoing challenges, both Harris and President Joe Biden abruptly canceled scheduled travel plans, sparking online speculation. Harris had been slated to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday but remained in Washington, D.C. Biden, too, has postponed his planned trip to Delaware for the holidays.
The decision to stay in Washington coincides with mounting uncertainty over a potential government shutdown as Congress struggles to agree on a funding measure.
Congress Faces Shutdown Deadline as Republicans Seek Solutions
On Capitol Hill, Vice President-elect JD Vance met with Speaker Mike Johnson and key Republican lawmakers Thursday night to address the funding impasse. Hours earlier, a slimmed-down spending bill backed by President-elect Trump was defeated in the House, with 38 Republicans joining most Democrats to block the measure.
The failed bill required a two-thirds majority to bypass standard procedures and secure immediate approval. This defeat followed a rebellion by GOP hardliners, including Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, who opposed an earlier bipartisan agreement that extended the funding deadline until March and included unrelated policy riders.
Speaking to reporters, Vance criticized Democrats for rejecting the funding proposal. “The Democrats just voted to shut down the government, even though we had a clean CR,” Vance said. “They’d rather shut down the government and fight for global censorship bullsh*t. They’ve asked for a shutdown, and I think that’s exactly what they’re going to do.”
Clock Ticks Toward Midnight Deadline
With a partial shutdown looming, House lawmakers are set to vote on another funding measure Friday morning. The stakes are high, as essential services such as law enforcement and disaster response would continue during a shutdown, but countless other government functions would grind to a halt.
The Biden administration has condemned Republican efforts to stall earlier agreements, with White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre accusing GOP leaders of “breaking their word” on bipartisan solutions.
As Congress scrambles to avert a crisis, the clock ticks down toward the midnight deadline, leaving the nation on edge and its leaders under intense pressure to find common ground.

“leaving the nation on edge” ….NO just the dems…fearful that younger generations of Americans will realize a government shutdown, of non essential services, has virtually no impact on their everyday lives. Demonstrating how “non essential” most of our government truly is and witnessing yet another of constant displays of hand wringing, finger pointing and hysteria by the left. BTW, has anyone figured out who’s running the country RIGHT NOW?????
What do the Dems not understand about the phrase in the 2nd Amendment, “…shall not be infringed?”
And you just don’t give a shit. How’d the gun get in the hands of the shooter? Is the person owning the gun being held responsible?
