New Year’s Eve Terror Attack Rocks New Orleans

In a shocking act of terror, a truck rammed through crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing at least 10 people and injuring dozens more in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The driver, armed and “hellbent on carnage,” was killed in a gunfight with police, according to officials.

“The city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said during a press briefing. The FBI quickly confirmed the incident as an “act of terrorism.”

A Scene of Chaos and Destruction

The mass casualty event unfolded at the intersection of Bourbon and Canal Streets at approximately 3:15 a.m., hours after revelers celebrated the New Year and just before the highly anticipated Sugar Bowl college football playoff game. Photos from the scene showed a white pickup truck with Texas plates crashed into a crane, a black object attached to a flagpole at the back.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick described the driver’s actions as deliberate and deadly. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” she said. “He was hellbent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”

After plowing through barricades and crowds at high speed, the suspect exited the vehicle and opened fire on law enforcement, injuring two officers. Police returned fire, killing the suspect on the scene. Improvised explosive devices were also discovered nearby, prompting further investigation by federal authorities.

Witnesses described harrowing scenes of destruction. “Dead right in front of us was someone’s mother, twisted, obviously deceased,” Jimmy Cothran, who took cover in a nightclub, told NBC News. “One man had tire tracks across his back and stomach. A little girl we saw dancing earlier was as flat as a pillow.”

Jim and Nicole Mowrer, visiting from Iowa, recounted the chaos. “We were pretty close to where it started,” Nicole told CBS News. “Once it was past us, we heard gunfire and saw police running. When it stopped, we tried to help several victims but realized they were already gone.”

Immediate Response and Investigation

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, including University Medical Center and East Jefferson General Hospital. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry condemned the attack, calling it a “horrific act of violence,” and urged prayers for the victims and first responders. President Joe Biden was briefed on the tragedy, with the White House confirming FBI involvement in the investigation.

Assistant Special Agent Alethea Duncan from the FBI’s New Orleans field office stated that suspected explosive devices found at the scene were being examined. “The FBI is the lead investigative agency,” the bureau said in a statement. “We are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.”
