Beloved Reality TV Star Dies at 68

Kenny Law, a central figure on Discovery Channel’s hit series “Moonshiners,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 68. Known for his dedication to the Appalachian moonshining tradition, Kenny’s passing marks the end of an era for fans and family alike.

A Life Rooted in Tradition

Kenny Law was born and raised in Franklin County, Virginia—an area often dubbed “The Moonshine Capital of the World.” As a third-generation distiller, Kenny didn’t just inherit a craft; he embodied a legacy. The “Moonshiners” series, which debuted in 2011, showcased his skill and commitment to preserving the art of distilling. Over its 14 seasons, Kenny’s authenticity and larger-than-life personality made him a fan favorite.

Henry Law, Kenny’s cousin and longtime business partner, shared with us how deeply rooted Kenny’s work was in their family history. “Our great-uncle Amos Law was a moonshine legend in his own right,” Henry said. “Kenny always said we weren’t just making liquor—we were keeping history alive.”

Together, the cousins ran Law’s Choice Distillery, a legal nod to their family’s storied past. “He loved sharing the stories behind each bottle,” Henry added. “For Kenny, it was never just about the drink; it was about the connection it brought.”

A Long Battle with Health Challenges

Kenny’s final years were marked by significant health struggles. A heart attack in 2024 weakened him considerably, and diabetes presented ongoing complications. Henry revealed that Kenny also battled a severe blood infection in the past month, which ultimately led to his hospitalization and passing. “He fought hard, but his body just couldn’t take any more,” Henry said.

Surrounded by family, Kenny passed away peacefully. “He wanted to make sure we knew how much he loved us,” Henry shared. “That was Kenny—always putting family first.”

A Community in Mourning

Kenny’s death has left a void not only in his family but also among his many fans and friends. Amanda Bryant, a fellow “Moonshiners” cast member, expressed her grief in a heartfelt tribute. “It was an honor to know you and call you my friend,” she wrote. “Rest easy, Big Guy. My prayers are with the Law family. They’ve always treated me like one of their own, and my heart breaks for them.”

The impact of Kenny’s life extends beyond his television fame. His contributions to Franklin County’s culture and economy through his distillery have been immeasurable. Local historian Sarah Bennett remarked, “Kenny wasn’t just a moonshiner; he was a storyteller, a preservationist, and a community pillar.”

Honoring His Legacy

Kenny’s family will host a public viewing this Friday, with a graveside service to follow on Saturday. The service will be held at the family’s ancestral plot, a fitting tribute to a man so deeply connected to his roots.

For those wishing to pay their respects, the family encourages donations to the American Diabetes Association in Kenny’s memory. “If Kenny could inspire just one person to take better care of their health, he’d think it was worth it,” Henry said.

As we say goodbye to Kenny Law, we remember not just a man who mastered the art of moonshining, but one who brought people together, told unforgettable stories, and cherished his family above all else. He may be gone, but his legacy will shine as brightly as a full moon over the Appalachian hills.
