Prince William Cancels Royal Engagement Last Minute

The 42-year-old Prince of Wales had been scheduled to visit the Army Air Corps (AAC) regiment in Wattisham, Suffolk, where he holds a prestigious role. However, Kensington Palace announced that the weather would “significantly restrict the planned program,” and the visit had to be postponed.

“The Prince of Wales sends his sincere apologies to those he was due to meet and hopes to reschedule his visit at the earliest convenience,” the palace said in a statement.

William had been expected to arrive in style by Wildcat Helicopter, a key aircraft for reconnaissance. He was set to meet with members of the armed forces, learn about their work, and speak with soldiers and their families about the challenges of military life, with a focus on resilience and mental health.

This was to be William’s second public outing in just two days. On January 15, he visited Birmingham, where he met with the College of Paramedics as part of his new patronage, before catching up with fans of his beloved Aston Villa football team in a local pub.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps, a position handed to him by his father King Charles in May 2024, William was set to meet with troops in the regiment formerly led by his brother, Prince Harry. The Duke of Sussex served in the AAC during his time in the Army, even training as a pilot and serving in Afghanistan.

While the official handover of the AAC role to William took place in a ceremony in May, Charles had announced William’s new military role in August 2023, nearly a year after his ascension to the throne.

Before taking on his current role, Prince William had a distinguished military career, including training as a pilot with the Royal Air Force’s Search and Rescue Force and later serving as an Air Ambulance Pilot for East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The Army Air Corps regiment is located about two and a half hours from Windsor, where William lives with his wife, Kate Middleton, and their three children—Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6.

On January 14, the Princess of Wales shared the news that she is in remission from cancer after receiving treatment in 2024. William’s visit to Birmingham the following day marked his first royal duty of the new year.
