Trump’s Most Hated CNN Anchor Gives Cryptic Signoff

CNN anchor Jim Acosta delivered a puzzling farewell message during Friday’s Newsroom broadcast, fueling speculation about the future of his show. Reports suggest Acosta’s program is being moved to a midnight slot, sparking debates about the network’s strategy in the post-Trump media landscape.

“It’s always an honor and a privilege to be with you, hour after hour, week after week,” Acosta told viewers. His words were laced with ambiguity, leaving many wondering about his next steps.

Acosta became a household name during Donald Trump’s first term, often clashing with the former president in heated press briefings. In 2018, Trump’s administration temporarily revoked Acosta’s press pass, leading to a legal battle that captured national attention. Acosta’s aggressive questioning style and high-profile confrontations made him a polarizing figure—beloved by critics of Trump and loathed by many of his supporters.

Insiders say the decision to move Acosta’s show is part of a larger effort to recalibrate CNN’s programming. Media analyst Oliver Darcy reported that CNN is attempting to “throw a bone to Trump” in light of his second term. “Midnight is not a serious offer when his ratings are among the best on the network,” an unnamed executive told Darcy in his Status newsletter.

However, the midnight slot—equivalent to 9-11 p.m. PT—falls within a prime-time window on the West Coast, potentially opening Acosta’s show to a new audience.

Acosta has reportedly not made a final decision about accepting the move. CNN has declined to comment on the matter, further adding to the speculation.

Acosta’s reassignment isn’t happening in isolation. Longtime anchor Wolf Blitzer is being shifted from prime time to a morning show, a significant change for one of the network’s most recognizable faces. According to Nielsen ratings, CNN’s viewership has plummeted by 49% since Trump’s reelection in November, prompting the network to rethink its approach.

These moves have sparked discussions about CNN’s identity. Is the network attempting to soften its anti-Trump image? Or are these changes purely a response to declining ratings?

In his signoff on Thursday, Acosta hinted at a broader concern about journalism’s future. “I want to take a moment to talk about something President Biden said during his farewell address,” Acosta said. “He warned the free press is crumbling in this country. I would add, that’s only if we, the people, let that happen.”

His comments echoed sentiments he’s expressed before: a belief that journalism is under siege. But for many, the question remains—is CNN’s reorganization a sign of adaptation or capitulation?

As CNN undergoes this dramatic restructuring, Acosta’s role—and his future at the network—remains uncertain. One thing is clear: the network’s next moves will be closely scrutinized, especially by those who see media as a battleground for America’s political and cultural divide.

  1. Free press? It hasn’t been “free” for a while. It’s been bought and paid for by the Democrat Party.
