Journalists Expose the Suppression of Hunter Biden Laptop Stories

Two former Politico reporters have accused their previous employer of suppressing critical stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop and other controversies involving the Biden family. They claim this editorial decision helped foster a misleading narrative ahead of the 2020 election, shielding then-candidate Joe Biden from scrutiny.

Marc Caputo, now with Axios, aired these grievances during an Inauguration Day podcast hosted by journalist Tara Palmeri. Caputo lamented that Politico editors rejected coverage of Hunter Biden’s alleged misconduct and silenced stories connecting the Biden family to controversial business dealings.

Suppression or Strategy?

Caputo specifically criticized a 2020 Politico headline referencing claims by intelligence officials that Hunter Biden’s laptop bore “hallmarks of Russian disinformation.” He argued that the framing undermined legitimate investigative journalism.

“Politico basically told us, ‘Don’t write about the laptop, don’t talk about it, don’t tweet about it,’” Caputo stated. He added that he had another story, touching on Hunter Biden’s work for Burisma Holdings, outright “killed” during the Democratic primaries.

“I had documents—opposition research from a rival campaign—detailing a tax lien on Hunter Biden tied to his Burisma payments,” Caputo explained. “It was a legitimate story, but it didn’t fit their agenda.”

Palmeri agreed, recounting her own frustrations with the outlet’s editorial stance. She described working for months on a story about Secret Service agents allegedly seeking to retrieve Hunter Biden’s federal gun-purchase form, only to feel her reporting was slowed due to internal hesitation.

A Larger Narrative at Play

Caputo and Palmeri’s criticisms extend beyond Politico. Both journalists highlighted the role of social media giants like Facebook and Twitter in suppressing coverage of the Hunter Biden story.

“Facebook and Twitter outright banned these discussions,” Palmeri said. “And The New York Post got locked out of its account for breaking the story.”

In 2024, it was revealed that FBI officials had pressured social media platforms to curb distribution of articles about the laptop, further fueling allegations of election interference.

Politico Defends Its Record

Politico issued a rebuttal to the accusations, standing by its editorial standards. A spokesperson pointed to reporter Ben Schreckinger’s extensive work on the Biden family, including his 2021 book, The Bidens: Inside the First Family’s Fifty-Year Rise to Power.

“Our editors ensure every story is rigorously vetted and fact-checked,” the statement read. “This approach reflects our commitment to accuracy and accountability.”

However, Caputo dismissed this defense. “Readers don’t understand how cowardly decisions are made at the top levels of journalism,” he said.

Fallout and Public Reaction

The controversy over Hunter Biden’s laptop has only intensified in recent years. In 2024, Hunter Biden was convicted on federal charges related to tax evasion and making false statements about drug use on a firearm application. He later received a sweeping pardon from his father, then-President Joe Biden, sparking outrage among critics.

The elder Biden also pardoned his brother James and other family members in his final days in office, despite denying any wrongdoing.

For many Americans, the Hunter Biden laptop saga has become emblematic of broader concerns about media bias, political interference, and accountability in public institutions. As Caputo remarked, “These stories matter because they reveal how power operates—and how the media often chooses to look the other way.”
