Mayor Defies Trump’s ICE Initiative Despite His State Voting for Him

In a bold move aligning with sanctuary city policies, Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey declared his administration would not cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to enforce deportations. This stance pits him directly against President Donald Trump’s efforts to curb illegal immigration through mass deportations.

“We don’t want fear in our city,” Gainey told the Pennsylvania Press Club on Monday. “My administration will not work with ICE. Instead, we’re focused on making Pittsburgh a welcoming place for all.”

Gainey criticized ICE as an ineffective solution to a “broken immigration system,” saying, “ICE won’t solve the crisis. It will only create fear and division.”

This sentiment echoes a growing resistance among Democratic mayors nationwide. Leaders in Denver, Chicago, and Boston have also pledged to shield illegal immigrants from federal enforcement.

Gainey’s approach has drawn praise from progressive advocates but sparked outrage from conservatives who see cooperation with ICE as essential for public safety.

Tom Homan, Trump’s appointed border czar and former ICE director, had a sharp response. “Mayors like Gainey are putting politics above public safety. This isn’t about fear; it’s about enforcing the law,” Homan said during a segment on America Reports.

He also debunked rumors of ICE targeting schools, adding, “That’s propaganda designed to mislead the public and stir panic. Our mission is clear—remove individuals who are here illegally and pose a threat to our communities.”

While many Democratic mayors oppose Trump’s crackdown, others, like New York City Mayor Eric Adams, are taking a harder stance.

“There’s no room for violent criminals in our city or this country,” Adams said last week. “We’ll fully cooperate with ICE to uphold public safety.”

This divide underscores the complexities of immigration policy even within the Democratic Party.

Gainey insists that immigration reform should come from Congress, not enforcement agencies. “If we want real change, it has to happen through legislation. Where’s the appetite to fix this system once and for all?”

In the meantime, Pittsburgh is partnering with local nonprofits to provide services for immigrants. “Our message is simple,” Gainey told CBS News. “If you’re here, you’re welcome. We’ll do our part to make sure you feel safe and supported.”

Critics argue that Gainey’s policies risk undermining federal law. “The law is the law,” said one local resident who attended the Press Club meeting. “You can’t just pick and choose which rules to follow.”

Others expressed concern about the broader implications for public safety. “If Pittsburgh police aren’t cooperating with ICE, who’s protecting us from criminal elements among illegal immigrants?” asked a retired officer from the city’s North Side.

As Trump ramps up enforcement, the battle between sanctuary cities and the federal government is likely to intensify. With officials like Gainey digging in their heels, the question remains: Who has the upper hand—local leaders or Washington?

President Trump’s immigration policies resonate strongly with his base, who see them as a necessary step to secure America’s borders. His critics, however, argue they foster division and fear.

The debate continues, but one thing is clear: immigration will remain a flashpoint in the 2024 elections and beyond.

  1. Figures! Why do the mayors and Governors say, WE will not comply, it is YOU. Don’t speak for everyone! President Trump is the boss not the mayor!!!! No wonder Pittsburgh is not what it used to be!!!!

  2. This fool doesn’t realize by not cooperating he is causing harm and fear among lawful citizens. I hope these political hacks get politically crushed and tossed to the street. They don’t care about legal people’s safety and to me that’s anti American fk them all and hopefully they will be unemployed soon.

  3. This should be good news, depending on how you use it. There should be a list published of sanctuary cities–especially making that list widely publicized in OTHER big cities. Then after the word is out (Move to Pittsburgh or LA or NYC and be safe). Illegals worried about deportation will move to those cities (sorry, no more free air fare; you’ll have to find a way to get there.)

Then, 30 days later, all federal support of illegal aliens EVERYWHERE is stopped. Hotels no longer get paid. Cell phone companies no longer get monthly checks. SNAP cards stop working. Prepaid debit cards are cancelled. Hospitals, clinics, and doctors only get paid for immediate life-threatening injuries or illness.

Sanctuary cities find themselves going broke, and taxpayer/voters are not sympathetic enough to pay astronomically higher taxes to pay for them. Announcement: Free bus rides to the Mexican border where you must cross.

  4. That’s OK Mayor you do what you think is best than the government meaning Donald Trump will do what he thinks is best because you can go to jail also and that’s what you deserve

  5. What an idiot. Doesn’t he realize his stance presents a grave danger to his constituents? Amongst all those that he wants to welcome are hardened criminals that would kill you for your cell phone or the change in your pocket! And they look look for these radical politics before public safety idiots to settle among.

  6. The Democrats broke our immigration system. There should be a law that states “NO PRESIDENT SHOULD EVER BE ALLOWED TO BREAK THE SYSTEM” The president under no circumstances should be allowed to open our borders. This is a treasonous act and should be acted upon immediately by the Senate to punish any President that attempts to defy the law.

  7. Well, as long as he doesn\’t get in the way ok. But if he attempts to disrupt ICE while doing their job he should be arrested as well.

  8. Jail him and all the others who are co-conspirators in the invasion of the United States by these “fifth columnists”‘ These borderline traitors need to be arrested, tried and sent to Super Max for say three years. I can promise after three years in Super Max they will not even think of jay walking let alone defiling the federal government.

  9. this Mayor need’s to keep these deportee’s and NOT get ANY MORE $$$$$$ from This NEW ” Administration, then we’ll see if he still Want’s ” THEM “
