Trump Suing Illinois and Chicago Over Sanctuary Laws

The Trump administration is taking bold action against liberal strongholds defying federal immigration enforcement. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a lawsuit against the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, accusing them of obstructing federal immigration law.

This move intensifies the ongoing battle between President Donald Trump and Democrat-run cities that have declared themselves “sanctuaries” for illegal immigrants. The lawsuit names Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson as key figures in what the administration calls an effort to shield criminals from deportation.

A National Emergency at the Border

From day one, President Trump has prioritized border security. He declared a national emergency, citing the overwhelming influx of illegal immigrants as a direct threat to American safety. “We are dealing with a crisis unlike any we’ve seen before,” Trump said at a recent press conference. “These sanctuary policies put American citizens at risk.”

The lawsuit argues that local and state laws, including the Illinois Way Forward Act and the Chicago Welcoming City Ordinance, have actively worked to block federal immigration enforcement. It accuses these laws of violating the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution by interfering with federal law.

Crime and Sanctuary Cities: A Deadly Combination

The DOJ lawsuit highlights the dangers of sanctuary policies, stating: “Some of these aliens find safe havens from federal law enforcement detection in so-called Sanctuary Cities where they live and work among innocent Americans, who may later become their crime victims.”

In Chicago, where violent crime has surged, critics argue that these policies have only made matters worse. “It’s outrageous that our city leaders care more about protecting illegal immigrants than the safety of their own citizens,” said Chicago resident and former police officer Mike Reynolds. “We’ve seen repeat offenders released back onto the streets because local law enforcement won’t cooperate with ICE.”

Democrats Scramble to Defend Their Policies

Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson, despite their sanctuary policies, have tried to claim they support removing violent criminals. “When we’re talking about violent criminals who’ve been convicted and who are undocumented, we don’t want them in our state,” Pritzker stated last month. Yet, his administration continues to block cooperation with ICE.

Mayor Johnson echoed similar sentiments, saying, “There’s a federal law that clearly states if you are undocumented and convicted of a crime, you are subject to deportation.” However, his policies prevent local police from working with federal authorities.

Trump Administration Tightens the Screws

Attorney General Pam Bondi has signed a directive cutting federal funding to sanctuary cities like Chicago. “We will not allow taxpayer dollars to fund lawlessness,” Bondi stated. The new directive ensures that any jurisdiction hindering federal immigration enforcement will face severe financial consequences.

This lawsuit is just one part of the Trump administration’s larger crackdown on sanctuary cities. With ICE operations ramping up in Chicago, New York, and other Democrat-led cities, thousands of illegal immigrants with criminal records have already been arrested.

“This is about law and order,” President Trump declared. “We will not back down.”

  1. When AZ and TX began trying to keep illegals from crossing their borders, Dem administrations took them to court saying immigration is the responsibility of the federal govt. And states must do what they say. The courts agreed with them. This sanctuary cities and states should not be allowed to exist as it’s not in their authority to have any control over immigration.
