Hundreds of ‘Enslaved’ Women Injected with Hormones in Human Egg Farm

More than 100 women are believed to be enslaved in the Eurasian country of Georgia, where they are reportedly injected with hormones to have their eggs harvested monthly. The operation is allegedly run by a Chinese gang that has trafficked these women for the illegal procedure.

On January 30, three Thai women were rescued from the horrifying scheme and returned to Thailand, according to the Bangkok Post. However, the rescue only came after Pavena Hongsakula, founder of the Thai NGO Pavena Foundation for Women and Children, urged local authorities to take action. Hongsakula learned of the operation from another victim who managed to escape back in September, after paying the Chinese gang a sum of 70,000 baht (roughly $2,053).

The Pavena Foundation estimates that around 100 more trafficked women are still being held in Georgia. Thai and Georgian authorities, with assistance from Interpol, are now investigating the operation. The women, primarily from Thailand, are allegedly brought to Georgia to have their eggs harvested by the gang.

In a statement released on February 6, Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the investigation, noting that its Criminal Police Department had begun an inquiry into human trafficking based on information provided by Interpol in Bangkok. Authorities have reportedly interviewed up to 70 foreign nationals, but only the three Thai women voiced complaints, explaining they no longer wanted to continue serving as surrogates in the operation.
