Mystery Woman Found Underneath Picasso Painting

A hidden portrait has been uncovered beneath Pablo Picasso’s 1901 painting Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto, shedding new light on the artist’s creative process and financial struggles during his formative Blue Period.

Art conservators at London’s Courtauld Institute of Art made the discovery while preparing the painting for The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition in Winterthur, Switzerland. Using advanced x-ray and infrared imaging, they detected the faint outline of an unknown woman’s face buried beneath layers of oil paint.

Who Was She?

The woman’s identity remains a mystery. Some experts speculate she may have been a model, a close acquaintance, or even a lover of Picasso. Others suggest she could be one of the many figures from Paris’ bohemian nightlife, immortalized in his early works.

“Picasso’s Blue Period was marked by emotional depth and financial hardship. He often repainted over old canvases to save money, but he also enjoyed transforming earlier figures into new compositions,” said Dr. Barnaby Wright, a leading curator at the Courtauld.

Picasso’s Layered Artistry

This is not the first time hidden paintings have been found beneath Picasso’s works. In 2018, researchers uncovered another secret composition beneath La Miséreuse accroupie, confirming the artist’s habit of reusing canvases.

Picasso himself hinted at such discoveries decades ago. “One day, x-rays will show all the paintings lying underneath my paintings,” he reportedly said in 1957. That prediction continues to come true as technology advances.

Further research will attempt to reconstruct the obscured portrait. Experts hope new insights will not only reveal more about the hidden figure but also provide a deeper understanding of Picasso’s evolving techniques during one of his most significant artistic phases.

The newly examined Portrait of Mateu Fernández de Soto will be on display at The Griffin Catalyst Exhibition starting this Friday, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the layered history of one of the 20th century’s greatest artists.
