A tragic incident has claimed the life of 17-year-old powerlifting champion Yashtika Acharya, who died after a 600lb barbell fell on her neck during a training session at a gym in Bikaner, India.
Yashtika was practicing under the supervision of her coach when the horrifying accident occurred. Footage from the scene shows the young athlete attempting to lift the heavy weight, only to lose her balance and fall backward. As she crashed to the floor, the barbell landed on her neck, rendering her motionless. Despite immediate assistance and being rushed to the hospital, Yashtika was pronounced dead shortly after.
Her coach, who had tried to catch the bar as she fell, sustained minor injuries during the tragic event.
Despite her young age, Yashtika had already made an impact in the world of powerlifting, earning a gold medal at the Junior National Games in India.
Powerlifting, a form of competitive weightlifting, can be extremely dangerous if performed incorrectly. Yashtika’s untimely death is a sobering reminder of the risks that come with lifting heavy weights, and sadly, it is not an isolated case.
In 2023, another tragic accident took place when fitness influencer Justyn Vicky, 33, died in Bali after a barbell fell on his neck during a squat-press attempt. The barbell, which weighed 460lbs, caused a catastrophic injury, and despite efforts to save him, Justyn passed away after surgery.
These heartbreaking incidents highlight the importance of proper safety measures and supervision in weightlifting, as the consequences of a single mistake can be devastating.
