Fan Dies After Falling from Stands During Game

A tragic accident at Munich’s Allianz Arena cast a somber shadow over Portugal’s dramatic penalty shootout victory against Spain, as a man died after falling from the stands during the Euro 2024 quarterfinal clash.

The victim, reportedly from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district in Bavaria, fell from the middle tier down to the lower tier and onto a staircase in the media area. Emergency crews rushed to his aid, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Munich police have launched an investigation into the incident but confirmed there is currently “no evidence to suggest foul play.”

The match itself had ended in a 2-2 draw before Portugal edged past Spain 5-3 in a tense penalty shootout. But celebrations were quickly muted by the devastating news.

In a statement, UEFA said: “Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away at 00:06. Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time.”

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente offered his condolences following the match: “I want to show my deepest condolences because a fan has died. It reminds us of what is important in life.”

Portugal’s delegation also expressed their grief. A team spokesperson said the death “casts a shadow on our victory,” while head coach Roberto Martinez called it “extremely sad news.”
