A bitter inheritance battle is unfolding after Hollywood legend Gene Hackman passed away last month at age 94, alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, at their secluded home in New Mexico. With an estate reportedly valued at a staggering $80 million, questions are now swirling around who stands to inherit the actor’s fortune, TMZ reports.
Shockingly, Hackman’s three adult children—Christopher, Leslie, and Elizabeth—were entirely excluded from their father’s will, originally drafted in 1995. The document named Hackman’s second wife, Betsy, as the sole beneficiary. But with her untimely passing alongside Hackman, the fate of their multimillion-dollar estate now hangs precariously in the balance.
Adding complexity, Betsy’s own will reportedly included a clause stipulating that if she and Hackman died within 90 days of each other, most of her assets would be directed toward charitable causes, leaving the inheritance even murkier.
“It’s shaping up to be a messy fight,” a source familiar with the matter told TMZ. “The children are stunned and understandably upset. They never saw this coming.”
Hackman’s son Christopher, notably the same age as his late stepmother Betsy, has already retained legal counsel and is preparing to challenge the validity of his father’s decades-old will. Observers believe Christopher will argue that the 1995 will fails to reflect the actor’s current intentions, potentially opening doors to a protracted courtroom showdown.
Complicating matters further, New Mexico is a community property state, meaning assets accumulated during a marriage are generally considered jointly owned. Legal experts speculate this could significantly impact how the fortune is ultimately distributed.
“In community property states like New Mexico, the lines of inheritance can become very blurry,” explained estate lawyer Martin Davis. “The court will have its hands full sorting out this one, especially considering the tragic circumstances.”
With the stakes exceptionally high and family tensions mounting, this Hollywood saga promises more twists as Gene Hackman’s legacy hangs in legal limbo.

I think his wife is
Learning the tragic circumstances of their deaths, his children should be ashamed to make any claim to his estate. Obviously they didn’t consider the welfare of the couple of any importance and even if they were reclusive, you would have checks in place if you cared at all. Hope they spend every penny fighting over it.
