Bernie Sanders Melts Down on ABC, Storms Out of Interview (Video)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Bernie Sanders lost his cool during an interview with ABC’s This Week, walking out mid-conversation after being asked a simple question: Should Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez run for Senate?

The 83-year-old socialist from Vermont was sitting down with host Jonathan Karl in a pre-taped segment when the wheels came off. Things were going smoothly until Karl touched a nerve.

“Would you support Rep. Ocasio-Cortez if she ran for Senate?” Karl asked, referencing growing speculation that AOC might challenge Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in the upcoming Democratic primary.

Sanders, clearly agitated, dodged the question and abruptly stood up from his chair.

“I just told you we’ve got a whole lot of people in Congress,” Sanders snapped. “OK, Jonathan. Thanks.”

Karl tried to salvage the moment, telling Sanders he had one final question. But instead of calming down, Sanders lashed out.

“You want to do nonsense, do nonsense,” he barked. “I don’t want to talk about inside-the-Beltway stuff. I got 32,000 people,” he added, referencing a recent rally in Denver where he appeared with AOC.

Eventually, Karl coaxed Sanders back into his seat, but the senator’s mood didn’t improve much. Asked about his political future, Sanders tried to reframe.

“I’m very proud that the people of Vermont sent me back with 63% of the vote,” he said. “I’m 83 years of age… and I’m tired.”

Why It Matters

The exchange highlights deeper tensions in the Democratic Party. AOC has built a national profile as a radical progressive and isn’t ruling out a challenge to Schumer, who’s facing blowback from the left after supporting a recent government funding compromise.

“There’s real anger,” said Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) on CNN. “She’d have a lot of support if she ran.”

Schumer, meanwhile, brushed off the idea of an AOC primary on Friday, telling reporters, “I’m focused on bringing Trump’s numbers down.”

A Crumbling Alliance?

Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez have long been seen as ideological allies, often appearing together on stage and championing similar policies. Just last week, the pair launched their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with rallies across swing states, taking shots at both parties — and billionaires like Elon Musk and Donald Trump.

But Sanders’ refusal to back her Senate prospects publicly may signal friction behind the scenes. Some progressives are growing impatient with party leadership, while establishment Democrats are increasingly wary of being tied to the radical left.

The Bigger Picture

With Sanders aging and Democrats split over strategy heading into 2026, the party faces a growing identity crisis. Meanwhile, Republicans are watching closely — and preparing for what could be a bloody blue-on-blue showdown in New York.

“If they want to eat their own,” one GOP strategist told us, “we’ll bring popcorn.”
