Brett Gardner’s Son’s Cause of Death: Update Given on Autopsy

The tragic death of 14-year-old Miller Gardner, son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, has left more questions than answers — and Costa Rican authorities say those answers could be months away.

Miller passed away suddenly on March 21 while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. All members of the Gardner family reportedly fell ill after eating at a local restaurant. They were treated at their hotel by an on-site doctor. Only Miller did not recover.

Grieving Family, Lingering Questions

Brett and Jessica Gardner shared their heartbreak in a public statement through the Yankees, calling Miller “a beloved son and brother” whose loss is “unimaginable.”

“We have so many questions and so few answers at this point,” the statement read. “But we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.”

Miller, remembered as a vibrant teenager who loved sports, fishing, and life itself, died just as the Yankees were preparing to open their 2025 season. Before their first game, the team honored him with a moment of silence — players and fans bowing their heads in solemn respect.

Autopsy Results Delayed by Drug War Surge

According to Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia of Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), the delay in determining Miller’s cause of death is linked to a growing crisis in the country: drug violence.

“We’re having a hike in homicides as these drug gangs battle for territory, and every one of them needs an autopsy,” Alvarado told the Daily Mail. “That’s the reality.”

He confirmed that an autopsy had been completed on Miller, but said the toxicology and pathology results could take up to three months due to the overwhelming number of violent deaths overwhelming forensic labs.

Costa Rica, once considered a peaceful tropical retreat, is now confronting a troubling shift. In 2023, the country’s homicide rate soared to 17.3 per 100,000 residents, according to data from Statista — the highest in its modern history.

Initial Reports Refuted by Autopsy

Initial local reports suggested Miller may have died from asphyxiation. But that theory was quickly dismissed by forensic experts.

“No abnormalities were found in the respiratory tract,” said the Forensic Pathology Section in an official statement cited by the Associated Press.

Instead, Miller’s body was subjected to a broader investigation. Samples were sent to multiple labs — including INCIENSA at the University of Costa Rica — for toxicology, neuropathology, and histological testing.

A Baseball Star’s Family Faces the Unthinkable

Brett Gardner, who played 14 seasons with the Yankees and won a World Series in 2009, retired from Major League Baseball in 2021. He and Jessica married in 2007 and have kept a low public profile since his retirement.

Friends and fans have poured in support as the family mourns. “We are so thankful to all who have reached out to offer support and encouragement during this difficult time,” they said. “We are confident our faith, family, and friends will help us navigate this unimaginable loss.”

The Gardners also asked the public to respect their privacy — a request widely honored by the Yankees community.

As the investigation into Miller’s death continues, the family is left waiting. Waiting for answers. Waiting for peace. And for now, hoping that truth will eventually bring some measure of closure.
