Kai Trump is pushing back after online critics falsely accused her of breaking one of the most talked-about rules at the 2026 Masters.

The 18-year-old granddaughter of President Donald Trump found herself under fire after sharing a series of Instagram photos from Augusta National during practice rounds, where she was seen enjoying the iconic tournament atmosphere and posing for pictures on the course. Almost immediately, critics pounced, claiming she had violated the Masters’ famously strict ban on cell phones and cameras.

But the outrage quickly fell apart.

Kai made it clear that the photos were not taken on a phone at all. In response to the backlash, she explained that the images were shot using her Sony camera, a key detail that completely undercut the accusations flying at her online.

The controversy erupted after Kai posted snapshots from her visit, including a photo with golf star Bryson DeChambeau and his caddie, as well as what some assumed was a selfie taken at arm’s length. Because cell phones are banned on the grounds at the Masters, critics instantly accused her of getting special treatment.

Cell phones and other electronic devices are prohibited, but cameras are allowed during practice round days on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for still photography and personal use. Cameras are only banned during official tournament days from Thursday through Sunday.

That means Kai appears to have followed the rules exactly as written.

After setting the record straight, Kai did not post anything else from inside the Masters, further showing there was no rules scandal here, no special exception, and no evidence of misconduct. Just another rush by online critics to attack first and learn the facts later.

Kai was also hit with another wave of criticism from people claiming taxpayers must have funded her trip to Augusta. But there has been no indication that taxpayer money was used for her visit. While Kai does receive Secret Service protection as the president’s granddaughter, critics offered no proof to back up their claims.

In the end, what was spun into a supposed Masters scandal looks more like another case of Trump critics trying to create controversy where none existed. Kai went to one of golf’s most legendary events, shared a few photos from a permitted day, and got attacked by people who either did not know the rules or did not care.

And once the facts came out, the outrage looked pretty embarrassing.
